The new Accent test pilot

OK first off let me explain my name....I am Radioactive Man as I deliver radioactive isotopes on a daily basis 5 days a week....who needs a flux capaciter LOL

I am a courier who lives in Calgary Alberta where -32 Celcius does not make people bat an eye....where black ice is the usual in winter and most people dont have winter tires as they say they are too expensive...yeah well body work is more expensive

For the last 9 years I have been running with a Ford Ranger base model with an inline 4 and 5 on the floor BUT Ford pissed me off....Ford has axed the Ranger after the 2011 production run so I am parting ways with the blue oval....I did give them a glance...the Focus was over priced and under optioned for my liking.....the Fiesta....yeah more like a Siesta with the sewing machine for an engine it has

I checked out VW/Honda/Toyota/Nissan for comparable models against the Accent and they all came up short.

I liked the handling of the Accent and I really liked the 4 corner disc brakes....I liked how well optioned the Accent was compared to the competition.

After 9 years of rear wheel I am excited to have a front wheel drive car that has some sportiness.....and this says a lot as I clock 60,000 KM's a year as a professional driver....so basically I am going to put the Accent to the hardest test there is.....can the Accent hold up?.....we shall see.

How the **** do you get a job delivering isotopes?! I hope it pays well for the obvious potential hazards.

I want to know more about your interesting job!

I was kind of in the same boat. My daily driver was an '04 Ranger with 270k miles on the clock, but it's currently out of commission so I went shopping for a new DD. I really wanted to give Ford a chance and liked what I felt in the Focus, but didn't think it justified the higher price they were demanding.

And to be honest, I liked the roominess and fun-factor of the Forte 5-door, but decided to be practical and logical and went with the Accent for it's higher efficiency, 4-wheel disc brakes and other safety features that are usually reserved for higher-end models.

By time I got home and saw that it had calculated my 55 mile drive in mixed-conditions at 39.9MPG, it made feel better about my decision.

I got a single time call many years back and since then the client has opened more clinics and since I was the guy doing the call the new timecalls were mine automatically. As for the hazards there are very few as the material is packed in lead cylinders and placed in an extremely sturdy custom made steel case.

Yes my job is interesting.....I get paid to deliver everything and anything whilst yelling obscenities at bad drivers though it does have it's downside....my "bananna day from ****" comes to mind....I had to move 640 pounds of bananna's to my truck and then onto my truck(including stacking the cases and sliding them from back to front of the box) and then unload them and they were refused due to being to cold.I then had to reload them and then uload them again at the pick up point....all told I moved 3000+ pounds of freight in about 45 minutes...I have not eaten a bananna since that day

Update on my 2012 Accent:I got THE call from the dealership today and the car has arrived less than a week after I ordered it.All I need to do is arrange for insurance by the weekend and I can take the bus up to Edmonton on Sunday (the dealer is open on Sunday) and I can pick up my new car

I do courier work too. My Accent SE has 12,996 miles since July 16th. I don't use ECO much because accel/responsiveness is inconsistant compared to the 'always ready' non-ECO mode. And I run the car slightly aggressively so my mpg avg is 34.

I think you'll like the Accent. But,if you haul much bigger stuff, you'll want to remove the rear seats. Only takes about 40 minutes NOT knowing what you're doing & about 15-20 when you do.(I had to put 'em back in for a family passenger recently). I can carry 5 large surgical totes now, with the seats in-3.
Good luck & keep us apprised.

I dont plan on removing the rear seats. My dispatcher knows I am down sizing due to the lack of consistent freight volume the last couple of years as well that Ford is dropping the Ranger.

My update for today....I got the insurance in place so I am all set for this weekend.....I also got a call from the salesman at the Clgary Hyundai dealership today asking about how it was going selling my truck....I told him that they guy who is interested either buys it by the 24th or I send it to auction....he then asked if I was ready to buy the new Accent....I told him that I allready did via a dealership in Edmonton....a dealership that did not want to shaft me as a consumer for an extra $1700 in "mandatory options" that I did not want.He asked me what I paid for the car and I said $17,864 all in with a block heater installed at no extra charge.....he went silent after that.....I guess if he had wanted to sell me a car and not shove a bunch of useless options I as a consumer did not want he would have sold a brand new car....I did voice my displeasure to him the last time I was in the dealership and I was told that the options were mandatory.....well it sucks to be him as I vote with my wallet and he missed out on MONEY.

4 days and counting till I get my new toy

I mentioned the seats since the floor isn't at all flat with them folded. I also found out today toward the end of a 2 day/1100 mile delivery, with seats out it makes a nice area for a quick nap!

On the 'test pilot' front,at 14,312 miles,a problem that's been developing is quite noticable now.

At hiway speeds, when the auto trans downshifts from 6th to 5th,there is a buzz/vibration/noise at the downshift & while accelerating. Happens every time now on uphill/moderate accel situations. I first feared a trans problem, but it seems now more of a trans/engine mount or exhaust flex-pipe/hanger that is transmitting vibes/noise into the car.

Really takes away from the smooth overall feel of the drivetrain. I'll update once dealer gives their opinion.

Gross....you got an automatic transmission ......a manual is the ONLY way to go....better milage and far more fun for driving....automatics are so uncivilized

No,no,no! This close-ratio 6-spd auto is NOT gross & is very well suited to this car. I drive for a living (2500 miles this week!). Eating,Nextel communicating with base & co-workers,checking street guides/maps,TRAFFIC JAMS,etc demand auto.

When I was younger (even 3 years ago),some of my work cars were sticks. Saved money initially, better mpg, most times more fun/control. But,at 57,any kind of ankle/knee/pain can put me out-of-business with a manual.

If my Accent has the mount/'dog bone' problem I think has,it'll get fixed. MAY affect manuals too. Anyway, don't hate on automatics, especially this one.
