I only have 1200 miles on my Accent, so I won't be changing the tires anytime soon. When I do, I am thinking of going to 185/70R14 instead of the 175/70R14s. Has anyone tried this?

The only thing is, you'll throw off your speedometer a little - 185/65/14s would bring it closer to, at least, whichever % error it left the factory with.

Thanks for the reply.

I realize it will affect the speedometer. That is actually part of the reason I am thinking about making this change.
According to my GPS, the speedometer is reading about 3% high. These tires are about 2% taller (this is only about 1/4 inch increase in radius).

Your speedometer is 3% off from the factory? Is that normal?

I have always understood that manufactures tend to calibrate on the conservative side. It doesn't surprise me.
We're talking about it reading 72 and the GPS reading 70.
What does everyone else think?

There's always about a 5% error margin. Remember, even amongst 175/70R14s, there can be rather large height differences amongst different tires/manufacturers.

Wow, I never knew that...makes sense though, I wonder if my slightly bigger tires (0.8-1.0%) makes my difference bigger or smaller lol

Mine came with 195/60 R16 from the factory. The only other size available from the factory is 185/65 R15. We have no 14" wheels/tyres combo for the Accent in India.

With the 195/60 the speed shown on the console and my GPS are the same..

Well, that's interesting.

This is what I have seen offered.
175/70/14 diameter = 23.64
195/50/16 diameter = 23.67

Your choices:
185/65/15 diameter = 24.47 (this would be my choice if I were to buy rims)
195/60/16 diameter = 25.21

So it should not be a problem using
185/70/14 diameter = 24.19.

Hey I'm sorry about that, but the actual size is 195/55 R16. Not 195/60.

The stock sizes are 195/55 R16 and 185/65 R15.

If you opt for 185/70 R14 your speedo will be off 1.1%. Which means it will read 60mph when you're actually only doing 59.3.

You can look at 205/65 R14 if you're sure you have to stick to 14" wheels as these have only 0.1% error.

Here are some good tyre size upgrades in various sizes:

14" : 205/65 - 0.1% too slow
15" : 185/65 - 0% Error or 205/60 - 0.9% too slow
16" : 195/55 - 0% Error
17" : 205/45 - 0.8% too fast
18" : 205/40 - 0% Error

If the Accents launched there have the same suspension and steering setup then these tires will not rub against the side wall when the steering is on full lock.

There are several tyre size calculators online you can look at. However do not go above 205 profile cause the tyre tends to rub the sidewall on full lock.
