2016 Accent three lights thrown no speedometer

Bought 16 Accent in December with 16k on it. Now at 18k. About a month in I was driving to work & the Emergency brake light, ABS light, and esc light came on while driving & speedometer went to 0. I pulled over and killed the car. Everything went back to working. It then did it again a couple days later, and I called the dealer. Took it to the dealer & they cleaned wheel sensors & looked it over. Told me to bring it back if it did it again. They didn't really seem to treat it seriously. Which didn't sit well with me since I took off work to get it taken care of. About a week later I started the car to let it sit idle & defrost windows. Came back out to the car & all three lights were back on. Speedometer didn't work again. I called dealer, and drove it straight there. Left the car running until service manager could get in it so they could see what it is doing & get codes. He drove it in and the dealership had it for three days. Made up story about how the speedometer started working when he drove it into garage even though I drove 20 miles and it didn't work. They told me they once again cleaned the sensors & disconnected the brain from the fuse block. Started doing it again not long after. I pull over and called Hyundai directly. Open up a case, and get recommended to a different dealer. Car has been sitting there since Friday with them being unable to diagnose the issue. Car has been at a dealership off and on for probably a week & three different trips since I've owned it since December, and nobody can figure out why this is occurring. I've read where wheel sensors or brake switches can cause this issue. The Hyundai support person I'm assigned to has a voicemail that is full & is incognito. The lower level support minions keep paging her but getting nowhere. Anyone have any ideas or ran into a similar situation on an Accent or any other Hyundai vehicle? It's done it while in park & not driving. It's done it while I'm driving it. I've driven directly to dealer while it's doing it. We are getting close to lemon law status. I went with Hyundai after excellent experience with our Santa Fe. But it appears this one is a dud. Great car other wise if anyone could figure out what's wrong.

I am just guessing out of my hat ...
The ABS unit talks with the ECM
The transmission VSS goes to the ECM to output a speedometer indication
The common link is The ECM.
Your car is almost too young to have frayed wiring or very badly corroded wires ... so, ...
It is almost impossible to say for certain that it is the ECM unless it is a hard failure and not intermittent
And why doesn't the ECM put out a check engine light??

Try to get a tech to condemn an ECM is almost impossible without definite proof cuz those things are expensive
But, it seems to me that the ECM is flakely.

Who knows maybe Hyundai dealer will figure this one out on their own???? ... lol

That is my fear right there. They have cleaned and cleaned. Looked over wiring to no avail. It's cost me time off work. I told the service manager I'm not taking the car back and getting stuck with a $2000-4000 repair after warranty expires due to putting things off now and them hoping I drive a car where the speedometer goes to 0 & lights come on randomly.

I've mentioned looking into lemon law to dealer & Hyundai rep. They don't seem to care enough to attempt to put the new ECM in and see if it comes back. Hyundai rep barely returns calls and only answers via email to me. I am willing to take the car back to the original hyundai dealer tomorrow and give them a fourth attempt. I really feel like it's been a bad thing taking it to a different dealer. The dealer & service rep seems to be focused only on this trip and discounting all previous work done like it never happened & acting since they can't see it do it now that outweighs the service manager seeing it do it at the first Hyundai dealer, and actual codes collected from the car while it was doing it at 1st hyundai dealer. I asked service rep to setup something to take it back to the original dealer because it's going to keep doing it and I've already taken it in to them with the car running, missed work, and had them hook into computer to get codes. I don't see what doing the same thing again will accomplish at a 2nd dealer other than eat up more of my work leave & make my family have to drive 20-30 miles to come pick me up and drive me to work.

We have lemon law in Florida and I believe if you have the same problem happening over and over then they have to do something. If your state has lemon law I would bluff and maybe get them to spend some money on car for fear that they may be eating it. You can call your state consumer department and they can tell you what options you have. You do not what to get stuck with new car that has electrical problems or later you will own them. Just a suggestion.

new dealer can't figure it out either. Wants me to come get my car broken and continue driving it. Acting like the codes and work done at previous dealer doesn't matter & they can't do anything about it or attempt a repair. The issue occurred and there was no codes thrown since I drove to work with the car messed up & killed it. Then took it into the dealer later. I showed them the picture of the lights & video of me driving the car where I recorded the time/date on my radio screen. Kind of at a loss and Hyundai corporate not really doing much through the case manager. All the regional parts & service managers are in California for training she said & can't help. Seems like the advice from the Hyundai rep on taking to a new set of eyes at a new dealer ended up being the wrong move. Because this dealer seems to not care or go on anything the last dealer did & the codes collected don't matter unless they see it do it in person. I guess if it happens at 10 PM driving home from work I'm supposed to leave the car running and camp out in the parking lot of a Hyundai dealer all night waiting for them to open up or it never really happened and I'm a liar.

On 4th trip back to dealer since purchase back in early December. I drove the car straight to the dealer when it acted up again. Found a lot of ABS failures. Hyundai engineer came out that doesn't work at dealer. Looked at the car for two days after it sat undiagnosed for a while and has ordered a new instrument cluster & ABS module replacement after tearing apart dash and doing trace on wiring. This issue seemed to reoccur whenever we had a cold couple of days after it being hot. Thought I would come back and update thread in case anyone else is having the same issues & finds this on a search. As of now it us unknown if this is going to resolve it or not. I'm hoping it's not the ECM. Looks like the repairs aren't cheap out of warranty after looking into it. Weird thing about this time was the speedometer went back to working, and all lights went away but the traction light about 25 miles into the drive. The times prior it wouldn't go back to working unless I killed the car and let it sit for a while. Will update if it fails again in future. Might be a while since we are going into a warmer period and it seems to be cold weather related so far.

Had to take it back for fifth time. They couldn't reproduce. Just got back from the sixth trip. They could reproduce now. Really humid day here and had fog this morning. Drove it straight to dealership. They said they had 2017 Accent come in with same problem in the past week. They found corrosion on all 3 main contact points of grounds for the PCM & ESC module. I haven't had time to confirm if that was it or not. I did notice the car sounded more quiet on the way to work from dealership. Notes from case

"C/S brake ABS and Skid lights coming on. When ABS & Brake lights are on speedometer doesn't work. Confirmed concern on service disk found warning lights coming on and off intermittently. Ran DTC scan and found multiple error codes for EMS invalid signal. Inspected all ground for PCM and ESC Module. Found Corrosion on all 3 main contact points of grounds. Cleaned all main ground and confirmed all warning lights now off and in history status."

Kind of concerned about having corrosion on a car from 16,000 to 26,000. Car came from Austin, Texas no really known for salted roads etc. Car is a 2016 Hyundai Accent. They replaced the ABS Module & Instrument cluster panel on previous try. Still worried if it's a wheel sensor based on google searches but the lights will come on when I start and leave it idle. It's not tied to while the car is moving. I have several videos of the issue going on upon request. I had started a lemon inquiry with Hyundai but waiting to see how this goes for another week.

A GROUND issue with a Hyundai?!?! Nah. Never happen...

If I were here more I would have told you to investigate the grounds...;) A bad ground can cause weird issues.

Here are videos I just uploaded of the issue for future reference if anyone runs into it.

#1. Starting up in my driveway lights are coming on

#2 10 minute drive with speedometer quitting to 0 when ABS/Brake lights coming on. Traction/skid light stays on entire time.

#3 After driving for 10-15 minute with ABS/Brake light being off. It starts randomly coming back on. Traction/Skid light stays on again entire time

Will update if issue comes back.

Same issues day later. Ground wires not the issue. Guess they will have to buy it back/swap it out for a different car. Called dealership & 3 week wait for loaner. Not going to work for me. 7 trips under a year to two different dealers for same issue. Thought maybe would come to some conclusion incase someone else searched with same issues. Apparently dealer said there was a 2017 that came in with same issue/same lights. Mine is 2016 so there might be some floating around doing this.

2016 Accent ABS, skid, brakes, speedometer problems

Having the same problem you speak of with the 2016 Accent my 15yr old drives for school... worried if these lights are on will she have problems with the brakes working in an emergency stop situation? Not to mention obvious problems driving with no speedometer. We took it in for service and of course they weren't able to reproduce the problem over the 2 days at the dealership. So we were told to pick up the car and we are having the same problems again this week. Letting you know you are not alone on having this problem and wondering if you have had any resolve as of yet.

Fifteen?! Where are you at? In most places (US) you have to be ~17 to drive. I wish I'd known this sooner, I could have been driving a year longer! Legally, anyway...

Today we also noticed the fuel gauge and range changed at first drastically after about 2 blocks and then up and down smaller amounts during the drive. This is not the small fluctuation we expect when the car appears to function normally. The range started at 108 and ended up at about 250, last night when the car was turned off the number was over 300.

I have the exact same problem with my 2015 accent. Went back and fourth to the dealer many times without them doing anything. Eventually they told me it was a bad ground connection to the ECU. The fix was to disconnect the ground, clean and reattach it. Worked for about 5-6 months and now I'm having the same problem. Looking forward to starting the charade over with the dealer. Did you ever get a permanent solution?

I hope they find the problem. Have the same issue for mine. 2016 Accent. Service manager at Hyundai check it and said a communication error. Found stored C1687, C1612, C1611 communication errors. Performed connector wiggle test per Hyundai. What a joke! Didn’t resolved the problem. Ready to call corporate and give them piece of mind.

Wanted to chime in as I'm having the same exact issue.

Bought a 2016 Accent HB in July 2016. The problem first appeared in December 2016 when the car was left sitting overnight during cold Eastern-Canadian winter nights. The problem only appears when outside temperatures are below -15C (5F). The problem usually goes away once the engine and/or engine bay has warmed up so I always figured the issue was related to a sensor that didn't like the cold.

The issue never appeared during warmer weather.

I called my dealership the first time it happened and they wanted to me bring the car overnight to let it sit there but we could never figure out a timeslot where the predicted forecast was cold enough while having techs available the next day. I'll try again this year lol.

I have a 2017 hyundai Tucson , 40,000 on... having the same issue , all the dashboard lights are on , speedometer not working , exterior lights flicker. Such a piss off , hoping to find the issue in the next few days as the dealership is closed right now. Please update me if you get this figured out.

Well I can tell you this, Hyundai does not do any grounding on the car that is bare metal.
All their ground points are put over a painted surface and the only connection to ground is via the screw holding the connector to the painted surface. ???

First thing I did when I bought my Accent was to take all the grounds inside the engine compartment and clean them to bare metal.
I also used bigger cabling as well because as an electronic tech I understand the benefits of a proper grounded system.

I bet many problems are associated with the way Hyundai grounds their cars and most people are completely ignorant of this.
Bad grounds cause issues.

Good luck all and hope the problems are found. ???

I'm having the same issue. I should have read your post before I posted mine. Mine is a 2012 SE HB stick with 72K on the clock. The only difference is I did not see any warning lights on my dash, and we are in the middle of a heat wave. Its been working like a champ until now. I'm going to have to go the dealer route and hope they are aware of the problem and have a solution.

I could not help but chime in. Had the same issue. Here's what you do. . Replace the Interior Fuse Box (they call it the Smart Junction Box) Hyundai PN 91951-1R540 for 2012 to 2017 accents. Once I replaced this, all the symptoms went away. I bought a used one from a totaled car on ebay and it was fine.

Aside from that, I've got a right taillight circuit out entirely. Anyone ever had that happen and know the culprit? Also, CEL for P0420 at 72k miles, presumably due to the seafoam gdi cleaner. Won't go away if I clear it. Hmm, lol.

Also to add to my comment, I paid 140 dollars at the hyundai dealership under warranty for a diagnosis because my vehicle had a sound system, which with electrical issues they always claim its aftermarket equipment thus anything electrical isn't covered under warranty any longer

Got Canbus codes pointing to ecm, abs, TC faults, etc. Normally there's only one system that will have a fault. I read something on these forums that said to replace this box and I did and all issues have cleared up aside from the ones I mentioned above, and some pretty serious engine pinging / detonation going on.

I would not go the dealer route. They have no idea about what they're talking about whatsoever and would likely go and try to replace incredibly expensive parts before as actually diagnosing the issue. The smart Junction box is not just a simple fuse box. It accepts and relays signals and all types of stuff. This is where my 4 canbus codes were coming from. Think of what the dealer would do. They'd probably replace the ECM, BCM, ABS computer, TC module, etc before even thinking of an issue with the fuse box. Honestly may never buy another Hyundai again with the experiences I've had with their service departments. Good luck with your "warranty"!

I had the same issue with my Accent 2017 and it seems like I got it fixed today at Steven Creek Hyundai, Santa Clara.

Attached are the scans of error codes they've found, and the final test report after the fix. There was a loose connection between the PCM and the dashboard. They were able to consistently reproduce the problem by wiggling the PCM harness. When they fixed the connection and wiggled it again, the problem didn't occur anymore.

Before this I had multiple attempts to reproduce it at AMMCO and I could never do it when I was there, even though it happened every day when driving.
