Why are 4 cylinder engines louder than 6 cylinder?

Whenever I drive a 4 cylinder engine, I immediately notice how loud they are. 6-cylinder engines on the other hand seem quieter and smoother. I've witnessed this test driving many manufacturers. What gives? Shouldn't it make less noise because there are fewer pistons?

Please enlighten my ignorant head-scratching self.

I think some of it is the frequency of sound each engine produces. 4 cylinder engines produce a higher pitch, for some reason, that we're probably more sensitive to. My guess as to the biggest reason is insulation. On 4 cylinder cars weight is more of an issue so less insulation is used. I'm sure there's more to it.
