Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm still having trouble with this.

I've unscrewed both screws to the high-mount assembly and it's loose, but I can't fully remove it from behind the back seat. I've pulled and twisted and can't seem to get it free. Is there something I'm missing?

Also, whenever I get the replacement bulb with plastic housing into the hole from under the trunk, before I can screw it in, the bulb becomes loose and falls out. Anyone else have this issue?

Hi I have a Santa Fe 2005 in the Uk. I have managed to locate the nuts/screws that I need to undo to remove the high mounted rear stop light box to replace the bu;b. Does anybody know the specification of the tool I need to purchase to remove these nuts/bolts which attach the mounting to the tail gate of the vehicle ? Thanks

You need to get your fingers under the assembly and twist the socket off. Once you get the socket off the assembly, you pull the assembly out. Then make sure you snip the tail off the socket so you can install the assembly easier.

LOL
there should be 3 items that are pinned on this section of Sonata
1. Sun visor
2. Third Brake Light
3. Break Light Switch

I think I see these being bumped daily.

replacing High Mount sonata 2006 bulb

1. I unscrewed the two screws from the trunk as described above by many forum users. 2. I pulled the whole high mount plastic unit from inside the car up. It was not does coming up easily, so I had to manoeuver a bit. Once I saw the long black bulb holder plastic unit, I used a thin long plier to twist it gently counter clockwise by 1/4 turn. The bulb with the holder came out. 3. I pulled the whole bulb and holder unit out from the square hole inside the trunk. 4. It took quite a while to remove the high mount plastic unit as the 3 plastic hooks were not easy to pull out. 5. While putting the whole plastic unit back after changing the bulb, it was becoming almost impossible without a chance of breaking some plastic. So I used a metal cutter to chop off the long extending flat part of bulb holder. This gave me just enough space to push the whole unit back in place. 6. screw the two screw back in from the two holes inside the trunck My lesson was that without chopping off the protruding bulb holder piece, it would been quite a challenge to put the whole uni back together.

Dealers light bulb replacement
Just got my car out of service at Hyundai, they noticed one brake light was out, both license plate lights were gone, and my high mount brake light gone as well. I went to Canadian tire, bought the three differnet types of bulbs and had all replaced in under 30 minutes for about 7 bucks in parts. Hyundai quoted me a price of $115.00 + taxes to fix it.
What a scam.

How to replace a Sonata high mount rear bulb step 1
Locate the hole as have been refered to in previous posts.

[attachmentid=4401]
The round hole at the top of the picture.
Cut out the sticky thing covering it up.
Now your looking for a gold colored screw inside the hole and a silver screw inside the square hole just opposite.

[attachmentid=4402]
Remove these and your half way there.

Inside the car pry up and out with a screwdriver on the back side. as you begin to get this up you will see the silver clip in the middle.

[attachmentid=4403]
continue to pull upwards until it pops free. (Be careful not to pry up too forcefully or you may break off the plastic clips in the back)
[attachmentid=4404]

Once the back clip is free you must untwist the light connector from the housing and push it back inside the hole. once done the housing will lift out.

[attachmentid=4405]
And now, As the Hyundai manual says the installation is the reverse of removal.
(Note: Pink Floyd- Dark Side Of The Moon/Breathe Should enlisted before or during the removal and installation)
I hope this helps.
SWS

Before I take on this challenge in the next coming days, what kind of bulb is it? Seems like the 912 is the one i keep seeing, but just want to clarify.

According to my records it's a 921. I changed mine in 2008 with a standard Sylvania 921 bulb and it has not burned out since.
