Strange engine noise at start up

2009 SE 3.3 Auto 63,000mi Car starts fine but after key is released from start to run position, every fifth or so start, the engine sounds like starting gear is rubbing on flywheel. Turn off engine and restart, no noise. For some reason I do not think it is a starter problem. Anyone else have this problem? Any thoughts as to what it can be? Also car seems peppier than normal.

Same happened to my 2009 Sonata 2.4l.

Starter was the problem. Got one from scrapyard, one hour to replace myself.

Try replacing starter first.

Same exact thing happened to me. It was the starter. The starter replacement on the 3.3 V6 is way more work than the replacement on the 2.4. The new Bosch starter is much quieter than the original one, even when it was new.

Slowly rotate key from OFF to ACC,, and slowly from ACC to RUN,, seen a number of Ignition switch fault where starter will start running / cranking engine in ACC or RUN positions.. $15 switch at tail end of key cylinder and 10 minute part swap

sbr711 was 100% on target. Thanks very much, saved me a bundle, switch was $12.75 at AUTO ZONE. Old switch was rough and sticking on rotation and starter ran at spots in ACC and RUN position. Took longer than 10 min because I removed metal brace across bottom of panel. Secret to removal and install is Key should be in RUN position when removing old and installing new switch.

Good job.

I replaced the starter on one of my Sonatas and in the end the ignition switch part was the problem. Very easy fix to do yourself.

I'm glad you got the job done.
