Im planning on replacing the ATF on my 2006 Sonata 2.4l GL. I dont know the history of the fluid changes as this was recently purchased, so I plan to do multiple fluid changes over the next few days (oil, power steering, coolant, trans).
Im planning to purchase SP-III genuine hyundai ATF, but im clueless on how many quarts to purchase. I dont have the manual to find the trans fluid capacity.
Can you let me know how many quarts to purchase, and possibly the part number for the tranmission drain plug? I plan to replace that as well.
Also, this is my first time changing fluids on this vehicle. Is it as simple as draining and filling for ATF?
For those wondering, I don't have funds to have the dealer do a complete flush.
Most people recommend a drain and refill as opposed to a flush. You need to purchase 5 quarts of ATF and one crush washer. Just remove the engine splash shield and drain the ATF by removing the drain plug located on driver's side. Clean the metal filings from the drain plug and reinstall with a new crush washer. Next, remove the transmission dip stick and slowly add the new ATF fluid through the dip stick hole (use a long, thin neck funnel). Periodically check the fluid level. When close to the correct level, warm up engine to the normal operating temperature. Move the gear selector through all gears a few times. Next, leave the gear selector in neutral with the engine running on level ground. Check the ATF level and top to the "hot" marker.
I get about 4.5 quarts out when I drain ATF (2009 w/ 2.4L).
I don't know that you need to replace the drain plug... maybe yours is damaged? As to part numbers, I know Hyundai's SP-III ATF is 00232-19012. Other dealers sell SP-III too (Kia UM010-CH002, Mitsubishi MZ320200). Some people prefer several drain and fills using high quality ATF from a major manufacturer like BP (Castrol Transmax) or Ashland (Valvoline MaxLife). I used to buy SP-III fluid from the dealer but the last fill was using Valvoline Import full synthetic ATF (blue bottle). A/T still shifts very well.
Awesome, I plugged in the part number and amazon has them in stock. With prime shipping I'll get it in a couple days. I don't think the drain plug is damaged, its just second nature for me to replace drain plugs on refently purchased used cars. But ill double check to make sure its in good shape. Any idea what size crush washer is needed?
8+ is dry fill when trans is built... 5 is common,, have 6 just in case..
Pull plug tonight, leave it sit and "drip" to Sat afternoon or Sun, depending on how big hurry you in.. Hit local Hyundai or Kia for your rings and ATF..
