Hey guys. First time posting here. My engine started overheating, and because I was stuck on a bridge during rush hour (George Washington Bridge in NYC), I couldn't get stop the car. I drove it for approximately 30 min (slow crawl), and this happened:
_______

edit: derp, it says you have to be registered for 7 days to post links. i know it's a hassle, but the youtube video code is xM5-AGkYZNw. the link is youtube dot com/watch?v=xM5-AGkYZNw and just replace "dot" with an actual "."
_______

Yes, I know how stupid it is, but there was not even a shoulder to pull over to the side. The only good thing is that this happened pretty much soon as I
got off the bridge, and not on the bridge.

Hose by the radiator cap (is that the overflow hose?) popped out and spewed steam for good 5 minutes. The car did not start at this point. I left the car by the gas station after the bridge, and came back later on in the night. Thankfully, it started and I was able to drive it home (about 10 min away) at crawl speed without it reaching the red zone.

Today, I just did the oil change, topped off on the coolant, and also replaced the thermostat. But the engine still overheats (to the red). The upper radiator hose is burning hot and the bottom radiator hose is not. Also, the fan is working, but it blows out pretty hot air.

What do you guys think I should check for next? Thanks a lot for your time in advance.

While the engine is cool, take off the radiator cap
Turn engine on. Watch for flow of coolant when engine reaches normal operating temp
If no flow then try ravving up engine a little and watch for flow
Check lower radiator hose for heat
No flow or no heat on lower radiator hose means "probably" water pump.

Good Luck

Cold bottom rad hose and hot rad hose is common if the is air in the system. Sqeeze the top and bottom hoses with engine running. Open the rad cap too.
Do that till bottom hose getting warm.

When you replaced the thermostat hopefully you installed it the correct way.

Also listen while sqeezing the top hose if you hear a tickking sound. That is the thermostat little air vent valve.

whew. just did a full coolant flush this morning and everything is good! (except my driveway. it's glowing green now). thanks a lot for the input everyone. also, thanks for mentioning the water pump. if it happens again, and a full coolant flush doesn't fix it, i will make sure to check the water pump also.

again, thanks!
