Hello Guys,
how often do you suggest to have the tire rotation/balance. Do you think if anybody need wheel alignment after tire rotation?
I did the wheel alignment after installing the new tires (at Discount Tire) 3.5 months ago. And after 4K miles now, I did rotation and balance, and the car is now pulling to one side and the steering wheel is also crooked (there was no problem before rotation and there is no uneven wear). What you guys think the cause could be?
I am trying to find the solution. The DCTire store ask me have wheel alignment again. I did alignment check and inspection at the dealer and they said I need alignment. Really? Is this normal? Is it really alignment problem? I dont want to spend money on alignment after each rotation like this. Nobody does, right? Is it alignment/vehicle worn parts/bad tires/any others? Any effort is much appreciated 00000732. I really hope you guys will help me out here.
It's not normal to need an alignment after a tire rotation. How is the tire wear for each corner of the car? Did this start right after the rotation or was it pulling to one side so you took it in for a rotation?
Steering wheel should not be affected by a rotation, they did something! As to teh pulling, that is possible if one of the tires rotated is out of balance or a defect that only shows up when the tire is on the front. However, both the alignment and the steering, I think the shop did something to cause that, neither should occur after a balance and rotation if all was fine beforehand
Well, if the tire rotation was done right then it might means the tires are worn badly to cause such a noticeable effect.
Check the wear on the tires.
If they seem normal then put them back where they were to see if it really is the tires
Normally, if the wear is even then rotating tires will not bring any noticeable changes to the handling
Wheel alignments are not unusual to be asked to be done by the garage
It is profitable for the garage.
If you feel you don't need it then don't do it
Like others mentioned, realigning the vehicle after 4K miles and tire rotation is not a normal practice.
Question about tires: what do you have on and what size? Also, did your tires get rebalanced or the shop only checked?
I'll tell you that I rotate my radial tires front to back every 6k miles which is my current oil change interval. I haven't had an alignment done in 50k or so miles which is how long current tires have been on.
The wear on the tires is normal. All tires are of recommended size, but not of same companies (three are from X and one is from Y). I felt shake in steering wheel while driving around 60mph, that's why I took it back to the store after 4k miles on them. Other than shake, nothing was wrong, it was perfectly aligned, driving straight, no pull, nothing. The store recommended tire balance and I agreed. They said that they did balance as well as rotation and gave it back in an hour.
After that it is now pulling to one side. Also, when I drive straight, the steering is at some angle. This is very annoying.
I took it back to the store they said it is alignment problem. And I had it checked at dealer and they also recommend alignment. But how is this possible? It has only been 4k miles since the last alignment. I feel really pissed off by the store.
In fact, I did the last alignment only because same thing (pulling one side and crooked steering ) happened right after installing the new tires. Driving was good before in old tires.
I don't know what to do now. What you guys think the best solution be?
Greetings, With the information you provided I would swap the front tires from side to side and see if the pull follows the swap. What you describe is indicative of a slipped tread in a tire. :frown: If the pull follows the swap... you found your problem. Question, why do you have one odd ball tire brand? :| This could also cause problems.
Let us know what you find out after testing. FYI, alignment not needed after a rotation. Bill of goods being sold you if the shop says you need one. Again, if the pull follows the tire swap then bad tire!
