Hey all, I was just wondering what I would have to do to install 2.5 inch piping with a new cat, and any recommendations for what brand of cat because Im not certain what would work best. Thanks.
Installing a 2.5 inch piping reduces the exhaust gas' backpressure to the engine, causes more fuel consumption and lower performance. Only the sound will louder.
Leave the factory cat-conv. on until it works!
But if you really want to change it, first look for some aftermarket product made for this car exactly.
The sport exhaust systems are made for sport cars which run at high performance.
But you can do whatever you want of course. This is only my opinion, I wouldn't change the factory set to anything else.
Maybe a rear muffler change might work if it fits for your car!
Greetings, Welcome to the forums by the way.

Being your Sonata is a GLS I am going to assume it is a 2.4 i4. If so it has the 2.25" diameter exhaust. My suggestions; leave the diameter as is and modify from there. Manufactures have gone to great expense to get the most performance from our smaller engines. Going to a larger diameter my hurt more than help. Louder, yes. Better performing, +/-. Keep the cats as they are. Check around by searching the forums and also youtube to get the sound you desire. To eliminate the drone that seems to appear once we change mufflers add a larger resonator at the center.
Good luck and again, welcome to the forums!
Just a note, removing the in line cat will be bad for the environment (boo on you) but it will reduce restriction in the exhaust as will upgrading the muffler. I personally think this will increase flow through the engine at the cost of noise and cleanliness of emissions. I don't have dyno charts to prove whether this is a good or bad thing. My personal experience is that you'll gain some performance. There are no O2 sensors after the inline cat so you won't get any codes out of it. Up to you to decide if removing that cat and freeing up the muffler is worth it. I agree that larger diameter exhaust may be detrimental to you. Since I don't think there's dyno charts out there to prove any performance gains it's all up to you. If you do ditch the cats and have the resources, the cat is worth a small chunk of change should you choose to scrap it.
