When my clock spring went bad, the cruise would not work. Deal-breaker for me -- I use cruise ALL the time. I let the dealer diagnose it (ESC light was also on). Once they diagnosed it, I just had them do it since they had the part and I didn't want to mess with the airbag.
It was about $400. Part was around $150, and by the time they had diagnosed it, the labor was not much more, so I had them do it. I live 75 miles from the dealer, and I had to take it back because I did not notice when I got it back that the steering wheel wasn't straight.
Has anyone ever tried to clean or re-tension the clock spring? Doesn't seem like it ought to be that hard. I did not actually see it, so I don't know.
Mine has been doing that for over a year and it does not seem to be getting any worse. I thought maybe it was just the "set" button itself. If it does not work after pressing it twice, I hold the button and move my finger back and forth a bit. This will normally cause it to work properly.
My gut feel is that it is probably the cruise control switch, itself.
Driving along a straight section of highway, not doing much steering, not doing much braking, the SET light eventually came on after 4 or 5 presses of the button. After that, everything worked fine. Accel, Decel, Cancel, and then hitting SET/ACCEL again got the SET light to illuminate immediately.
