Cannister materials??

Does anyone know what the material is inside the small cannister just before the "air filter - solenoid assembly"? This is all located under the wheel well back by the gas tank. It is the 5" long by 1" Dia plastic unit. Hyundai gets $165 for this little gem.

If you're talking about the fuel tank air filter, then there's really nothing in it. I cut open the one from my 2007 Sonata. It only has a few baffles that the air travels around, there's really no filter.

Pics here:
A look inside the NF Sonata's fuel tank air filter -PICS-

It costs significantly less than $165. The MSRP is about $49. Does your price include installation? Again, we could be talking about two different things.

I'm talking about the small cylinder just upstream from that unit. It is a sealed component that contains some type of particulate. I was not able to fill my tank without the pump constantly turning off. I removed the part in question and tapped it on the ground a few times to loosen the material inside. It became much easier to blow through it after loosening the material.I can now fill the tank without it constantly shutting off.

On my Sonata there was nothing between the fuel tank air filter and the vapor canister. The vapor canister on my car is a flat rectangular box. At least, that's what I remember seeing when I replaced the fuel tank air filter.

I believe it's full of charcoal and a member here has said they're small pellets.

Can you find the part you're talking about on a schematic on a parts website? That would help us. There are several dealer parts websites that have parts schematics.

Also, are you talking about the small cylinder that's part of the fuel tank air filter assembly? That's the valve part. As far as I can tell, it's just a small spring loaded valve that appears to be electronically controlled.

It is in between the air filter shown above and the large rectangular charcoal cannister above the tank.
part number stamped on it is 31421-0A000. It may be a California only component.

It is a California only thing. Mine doesn't have it. Google the part number.

I removed it from my 2009 Sonata and replaced it with a piece of hose. I no longer have problems filling the tank and no more P0449 code. Wish I knew what it was supposed to do.
