From my 2008 Sonata's manual:
"Running out of gasoline may cause the engine to misfire and result in damage to the catalytic converter."
Yet they still instruct:
"Start the engine and wait until fuel in fuel line is exhausted. After the engine stalls..."
I know, the argument will be that doing this once won't hurt anything. Uh-huh. I guess it's another case of "What you don't know won't hurt you".
