I have a 2006 Sonata with the V6 and 95,000. Last week the harmonic balancer pulley came apart. This week fixed a bad connection on the cooling fan controller and now I have a a drivers side inner tie rod that has a lot of play and needs to be replaced. Did a search on here and didn't find anything under "Inner Tie Rod","Tie Rod" or even "rod" for that matter.

Anyone have any experience replacing one? Do I need any ridiculously overpriced special tools?

Thanks. This forum has been a lot of help, especially with the harmonic balancer and the fan controller.

Yeah it's definitely the inner tie rod. I live in Northern Illinois and not only is it one of the worst states to live in, but it has the worst roads.
Beside the crank pulley coming apart at 95,000 miles, this inner tie rod is the only other part that has failed on this car. Actually pretty good for what the car cost.

You will have to obtain an 'Inner Tie rod" tool in order to remove. Not sure if you can without it.

Harbor Frieght has one for about $50. Probably more expensive anyplace else.

Not difficult with the right tool.

Check the condition of the rubber boot - you will have to remove it also.

Good luck.

Thanks. Yeah I think I can rent the tool at Autozone or Advance Auto Parts. Had to order the inner tie rod, should have it Tuesday.
Do you know if the clamps on the rubber boot can be reused? or do you have to destroy them to get them off?

The outer clamp usually comes off. The inner clamp may have to be cut off (the ones I have seen are just wire with the ends twisted). I've used tie-wraps on the inner side as a replacement and have not had a problem.

Removal tool is a free rental at advance auto parts and the job was pretty easy with a good impact gun and compressor. Went ahead and replaced the outer also. The inner tie rod that failed was very corroded and didn't look like it got greased at the factory. The boot was fine with no damage and the inner ring has to be destroyed to get the boot off. Replaced it with a large zip tie.
