Stainless Exh. 013?

Does anybody know if the 013 Elantra Limited has a stainless exhaust system? If not the pipes, is the muffler? I would really be surprise if anything is stainless on it.

Almost all cars made in at least the last decade have SS exhaust systems. They have to meet the federal and state emissions standards for so X number years or miles that SS is the only thing that will last. It's not the highest grade, but enough to do the job.

I believe that most OEM stock mufflers, like on our Elantras, is aluminized steel, which is not as susceptible to rust as "plain" steel, and not as cost prohibitive as stainless.

While we talking "exhaust" systems: short trips, quick runs, lots of stop and go will ate your muffler quicker. Why? Condensation. It settles in the muffler, begins to eat away at the interior. The exhaust system really doesn't have time to achieve maximum heat effectiveness to dissipate the moisture. Ever seen a car in front of you with water dripping/streaming from its tailpipe?

Vehicles that travel longer distances will have a longer life cycle on the muffler due to heat evaporating the water buildup. Something like that.

Our stock exhaust systems are not SS. They are aluminized steel. If you live in a warmer climate where they don't use road salt, the system should last a very long time, keeping in mind what OkieRich mentioned.

For people who trade their cars every 5 years or so, the days of replacing exhaust systems ended sometime around the mid-1990s. Nowadays they seem to last 5-10 years depending on climate and driving patterns.

We recently traded in a 1999 Mitsubishi Galant with 148k miles with the original exhaust system intact after 14 years on the road.

My 89 Supra still had it's original exhaust system when I bought it just over a year ago. It was only then just starting to develop cracks.

For almost 2 decades now most (if not all) car manufactures have been using SS exhaust systems on their vehicles. Car manufactures are using a low grade of "409" SS which still rust on the surface but does not rot away. In harsh conditions this grade of SS will still last 10-15yrs without any issues . Aluminized steel would only last 2-3yrs before rotting out.
My old 1988 Dodge minivan had a SS system, same as my Dad's 98 Windstar, same for my old 2000 Dakota, my 2001 Mustang and 2003 Corolla.
Never had a problem with the exhaust systems!!

I do not believe that Hyundai would be the only manufacture using Aluminzied exhaust systems.

Do you have any sources to support this? Not that I don't believe you, I'm just curious.

Haven't actually physically looked at the exhaust system yet. You could be right.
