Complaint : Knocking on acceleration
Cause : Cylinder 4 rattling under load
Correction : Short block replacement
Mileage : 31,332 km
Now waiting for short block to arrive for replacement. I had to provide proof of maintenance (oil changes) as I don't go to the dealer. Had all the paperwork in the car and Hyundai OK'd the replacement.
If it has to do with some type of coating flaking off ,I can not figure out why they put a coating there in the first place , unless it was to reduce friction. The only effective place to put it then would be on the piston block wall . But, why the knocking sound?....knocking sound always indicated to me some type of oil starvation. It is still a mystery and until more info is forthcoming it just a guessing game .

Anything that reduces fuel consumption by 0.01 mpg is popular these days. Ironic when one considers the energy wasted every time a broken engine block is replaced.
The sound is coming from the piston slapping against the cylinder wall from excess play from missing coating on piston. Once piston/cylinder wall heat up and expand noise goes away.
This piston scoring and slapping is some scary stuff. Do an oil analysis on your engine to se if there is any unusual wear. I did an oil analysis on my engine and fortunately everything is looking great. I will post it as soon as I can figure out how to do it.
I'd like to see a Blackstone report from a car making knocking noises.
I've never been interested in paying 25 bucks just to see how long I can prolong the next oil change, but as a "reality check" when the car is about to go off-warranty, or when you're facing other major repair decisions, it's a great idea.
I really hope Hyundai steps up and extends the warranty on these. I only have a year of warranty left and am at 60000km. A $5000 repair in a couple of years would be enough to send her to an early grave.
Just got this letter from Hyundai Canada today. Seems in Canada they are stepping up and giving me a unlimited time/mileage warranty on this issue.
It's transferable as well, so if I sell the next person is covered too.
Yes they will replace it if your Car is out of warranty because it's a camping, they have said that they messed up and will fix it under warranty if you have oil change records.
I think it's because the Elantra in Canada are built in the Alabama plant were they had the problem, I think american Elantra were built in Korea hence md (built in Korea) versus ud (built in America)
Most North American Elantras come from Alabama. Korea only handles the overflow.
Why is this a predominantly Canadian issue? My guess is a combination of sales volume + maintenance habits + climate. We Canucks buy a lot of Elantras - it's our #2 selling car right behind the Honda Civic - and we are not nearly as religious as Americans about maintaining them. And the climate, well, google it.
I agree the climate up there is rough on a car, big time. Down here we have different problems, extreme heat (torture at times) and roads that are so "holy" you can take them to church.
In the first 5-7 years of the car's life, I expect the extreme cold to cause more problems on these cars. Do they put lower temperature rated fluids in the vehicles sold North of the border? The stock fluid in the windshield wipers froze the first time It saw -4C outside. But surely you have to add more antifreeze up there? In all seriousness it does suck that even with all the snow and ice and how that takes a toll on the car's body they (Hyundai) didn't make an engine that could outlive the body. I know a few ancient Honda that look like shitbuckets, and could probably outrun me on the highway. (I don't do racing, unless you want to race to 40MPG)
How can I tell when mine was made? It is a 2013 and I bought it in March of 2014 so I hope I am OK. Do all my own oil changes and bought genuine Hyundai oil filters from Korea on ebay. What would I need to show I keep up with the oil changes?
Is there a time range of manufacture of engines having this problem? Are the engine blocks made at the assembly plants or elsewhere? I have 142K miles on mine so I hope I don't get this problem now, well out of warranty.
They will do it even if it's out of warranty, but if it hasn't happened yet it prolly won't ever
