I'm in the market for a used Elantra limited and I'm looking at these two.
This one has lower miles (23,XXX), noted oil changes every 3,000 miles via car fax and cheaper. BUT it's not the color that I despreataly want. Listed at 14,993.
Here is the color I want, but the car has more miles (36,XXX) and Minor cosmetics blemishes on the bottom front bumper. Also, this car is certified preowned but doesn't have the detailed carfax report as the other. This car is listed at 15,995 and both cars are equally clean.
So, I offered 15,000 walk out price on the silver one but they said they couldn't do it for that price. I'm willing to go to 15,500. I have yet to make an offer on the first one. What do you guys think? I'm in Texas BTW.
To those who settled on a color that wasn't nescesarly their first choice, does it still bother you? Or are you over it and enjoying your car? I'm just really stuck on that silver!! Grrrr
I'm finding that out. I do have comfort in knowing that the silver one is indeed certified. Would you consider my offer of 15,000 out the door reasonable?
The color is what you will see every time you walk up to the car, so maybe you should get the silver one and be happy. I think that the offer you made on the gray Elantra was fair and I would hold out for that car, but that's just me.
The offer I made was for the silver one which is the color I want. It's been on the lot since Halloween! My heart says silver but my mind says grey. Sigh
Personally I like value for my money and till I bought my car(s) new, I looked at the value of what I was buying. Less miles for less money being the same car and trim level. I'd go with the value.
The Titanium Gray Metallic is a wonderful color. Much nicer than the Shimmering Silver...but that's just me.
The lower mileage one will probably have a better condition seat and steering wheel, you said it has less problems on the paint.
Both have tint, which is a plus.
How about the tires? The higher mileage one surely has had them replaced, but how long ago and with what quality of tire. The lower mileage one will probably need them in 10-15K.
The suspension will be more worn on the higher mileage one, so there's that. You're going to need KYB rear shocks on either one. There's always more to consider than the Engine mileage, not only because of the entire drivetrain usage, the less warranty left, but also the trade value down the line. They really beat you up on higher mileage cars.
I'd pick #1 , and if they won't lower the price, try to get them to give you some free maintenance or additional warranty coverage.
Or....keep looking, and expand your radius. There's been a ton of Elantras sold, so there's probably no shortage of them around Texas.
Also look into how many previous owners each one had, and whether the owners were individuals or rental companies/fleets. Personally, I'd pay a little extra for the peace of mind of the CPO, even if it has 13k more miles on it, but I'm sure there are plenty of people that disagree and think it's a waste of money.
Both are one owners/personal use. I question whether the CPO is really That much of a plus? Can someone explain that to me? 22,xxx just looks better than 35,xxx.
Well you guys talked me into it and i just got back from the Audi dealer (grey Elantra). Car was pretty much spotless and as advertised. The guy goes on to explain that the car is 14,995 BUT that doesn't include the dealer add ons that are not negotiable. I told him I was already financed and was willing to bring him a check tomorrow as long as we agreed on a price. Went in and sat down, he comes back with a price of 16,8something. 2,000 more than advertised because of the add ons blah blah blah. I told him with the price being 14,995 I was prepared to pay 15,000 walk out. He wasn't having it. My final offer was 15,500 walk out which he seemed to be going for. He goes to the back to talk to his manager of course and the manager tells me that he can't do 15,500. He says he can budge a little on 16,800 by maybe a couple hundred but that's all. I stood firm and we agreed that maybe that car wasn't for me.
Question: am I being cheap? We're talking about a Hyundai model that is in its last year before a complete redesign.

Something decidedly fishy here. If they advertised it for a price, that IS the price! If this is the one that's been there since Halloween, I think he found the answer why it's still there!
I didn't notice where you're at, but In Mass, anyway, when you advertise a price, you have to stick to that price. Someone's blowing smoke rings.
Get them to bend on something at that price...full 100,000 mile warranty (if it's a Hyundai dealer), etc.
I paid $21000 OTD on a brand new 2014 limited with tint and a bunch of other stuff included. That was probably about 8 months ago and I bet you can get better incentives now and a better deal. Also you can get a lot better interest rate on a new one that will save you lots of interest. Also I think that the 2014 has much better insulation and ride. It does make a difference on the dealer too as for price. as much as $1500
I think the small difference in price you will pay for a new car would be well worth it.
What exactly are the dealer add-ons?
I checked some prices in my area, which of course doesn't really mean anything because of regional differences, but I thought the 15K was a good deal for the fully loaded car that is less than 2 years old, originall sold for around 25-26k, and low mileage. In my area, the 16,800 would be an average price before taxes, tag, and title on a limited WITHOUT tech. With tech, we're over 17. 2013 Hyundai Elantra for sale in New Port Richey - 5NPDH4AE0DH427750 - Hyundai of New Port Richey Certified Used Cars
The add ons were already added onto the car and were not negotiable. something about windshield protection, leather protection and wheel scuff repair. The only thing that was optional was something called footprint?? To go from 14,9 to 16,9 was a blow to the chest. If the true cash price was 14,9 + TT&L here in texas then my 15,500 offer wasn't a steal for me.
What kind of used car place are you shopping that wont make a deal. If you left your phone number just wait for a call in a few days then negotiate another $500 off whatever price they give you. There are lots of Elantra out there right now and you will find the deal you want soon. Tell them to take their addon and stick it.
Lol thanks. Yeah I'm expecting, and deep down hoping I get a call back. I made an offer on the silver one yesterday but no call back today. There was a younger kid looking at the grey one when I left today. I'm gonna drive by tomorrow and see if he bought it
I'd look into the one at the Hyundai dealer. It's more but they include reinstatement of the 100k power train warranty, 10 year roadside and 1st day rental car. May be Hyundai will make a better deal.
The Hyundai guy was more of your typical used car salesman. Very pushy, condescending, and just a smart ass. I told him the grey elantra was a little more pristine on the outside, and he said "well if you care about what a car looks like instead of how it runs then go buy that one"....I laughed and said "believe it or not I care about both".
I'm going to up my offer to 15,500 on the silver if he doesn't call me back. It's the end of the year!! Aren't they suppose to be motivated to sell?? Grrrr
we just bought our 2nd Hyundai - a 2014 Elantra Sport for $17,500 brand new. There are still 2014's out there and at least in the case of our dealer - they were willing to move. We barely had to haggle with them. I do all my negotiation by email so that when we show up we are ready to make the deal. Obviously that's easier with new cars than used, because you need to look the used car over more carefully. I would think you could grab a brand new one for pretty close to what you are looking to pay for used.
Hahah I talked myself out that deal. I actually believe the younger kid who was looking at it when I left bought it because I didn't see it on the lot the next day. I've turned my attention to the silver CPO one. I've read up on the perks of CPO and there is definitely some peace of mind that comes with that, even with 35k miles.
My salesman never returned my call or email Friday and we've been negotiating, so when I checked this thread and noticed mogelijk's post on how the cars price was dropped by a thousand (thank you btw) I immediately called my salesman to see if the car was still there. He told me it was so I headed up there immediately with a big smile on my face ready to buy the car, I even stopped by the bank to withdraw my deposit. He called me back saying someone was in the finance office hoping to close to the deal, but I headed up there anyways just in case. I pull up and find the car and waited around a few only to watch a guy get into the Elantra and drive away into the sunset. What's even more depressing is when I'm headed home on 610 I notice the guy driving right besides me pretty much all the way home . It was actually depressing... The car was so pretty! Exactly what I wanted color/style/package and CPO. The **** car was on the lot since October and this is the day it sells!!! Lesson learned...maybe don't try to haggles as much? Idk but the salesman could have given me a call the day they dropped the price! I'm holding out for exactly what I want, but for how long??
I bought mine off the lot new in 2011 for 17,200 out the door. Keep your eyes peeled and you'll find a good deal. I only have 50K miles on mine and id gladly sell it for $9,500 cash today, so there are sure to be deals out there.
Just an update: I ended up buying a new 2015 Elantra sport with navigation. I think things worked out for the best. I appreciate the advice and support! I even got it in the silver I wanted !
Nice! You're fortunate the Sport offers NAV this year. I don't think it was available in '14. Congrats.
