Manual shift mode question...

(If this has been discussed already, sorry! I couldn't find it in my search.)

So I know the Elantra is no rocket ship when it comes to acceleration, but every now and then I like to use the manual shift mode just to have some fun. But I've noticed a VERY annoying "feature" of the transmission in manual mode. If I am hard on the gas in 1st gear, then shift to 2nd...the car will automatically bump me to 3rd gear almost instantly without me telling it to! It does this at around 3.5k to 4k RPMs, not near redline. So basically the car bogs down because it shifts to 3rd too soon. It holds 1st gear to redline, holds 3rd gear to redline, holds 4th gear to redline....but it won't hold 2nd to redline unless it shifts automatically to 3rd then I force it back to 2nd.

In fully automatic mode, the car holds to near redline in every gear without a problem.

I've owned several automatic cars with manual shift mode and NONE of them have operated in this fashion. Anyone else notice this?

Mine does not do this. What I have had happen is I shift into second just as the car is doing it for me and end up in third

Hmm...maybe I'm up-shifting at the same time the car is forcing an up-shift from 1st to 2nd and then it reads that as 2 up-shifts which then dumps me into 3rd. It's a possibility! I'll mess with it some more tomorrow and see if I can figure it out.

The ECU is programmed to switch to 2nd gear automatically passed 5500RPM.
So basically get used to not shift the first gear and it'll do it itself then shift the 2nd to 3rd, etc...

I was shocked by this the first time.

Yeah, I tried this some more today and you are right. That was the issue. The car was forcing the shift from 1st to 2nd at about the same time as I was pushing the lever forward. So it in turn it would immediately shift from 2nd to 3rd.

Now I just need to remember not to bother with the initial 1-2 shift.

Also keep in mind the tach in the Elantra is very slow, I have noticed. So it's not actually shifting at 5500 but more like 6500.

If you rev the engine quickly (like accelerating in 1st), the tach falls behind by about 1000rpm. You'll see it when you shift, the engine rpms fall going into the next gear, but the tach doesn't react and continues climbing up past 6000 for nearly a good full second.

I must be getting old, I used Shiftronic to get into higher gears sooner. Kind of like riding a harley as opposed to a sportbike.

it not supposed to upshift with gear skipping.

One question though - how long it takes for PCM to upshift after you select higher gear?

I noticed in my Rondo one thing (it takes about 500-800 ms for transmission to react).
So, when I am trying to rev it near redline, and then upshift, I end up with upshit instead. The rev limiter kicks in, although not supposed to, and not much, but noticeably lowers power during upshift.
Hence, I select to upshift from 1st at about 4.5k RPM. This way within the next 0.5 second the revs will go higher, but the shift will take place like I want to.
Of course due to ECU/PCM you will not feel the "jump", it is always smooth upshift... not like M/T on Elantra. PCM will not tell me when to upshift and what gear to select. No upshit here.

That's the other half of it. There is a half-second delay or so after shift input to transmission reaction. That in combination with the slow tach = double upshift. You think the engine is revving nearly 1000rpm lower than it actually is, so you wait to select the next gear. The ecu notices it's time to shift and shifts on it's own, right when you decide it's time to shift. Then it receives your command and shifts again. Annoying, but once you realize what's going on and why, you learn to compensate and work around it.

If I'm really wanting the car to take off, I let it do the 1-2 upshift in shift-tronic mode, then I select 2-3 and on... Saves me from making an accidental and embarrassing (accleration-killing) double upshift.
