LOL, well if the 225 tires give more protection to the rims, then 225 is the way to go... but fuel mileage? The car has stock 195/65/r15 rims.

215/45 tires Speedometer Difference: 0.519%
225/45 tires Speedometer Difference: 1.959%
is that true?
Sorry if I do so many questions but I want to put the best performance/looking rims to the car

I'm running 215's on 17" rims. I don't see the 225's affecting fuel mileage very much, if any. But I may be mistaken. Our tire experts will know.

What's that work out to, about 1-2 mph difference? My speedo is about 1 mph off WITH stock 215's. I really don't think about it, or care about the error.

Like I said earlier the 215 is slightly undersized then the other stock wheels available on the Elantra. Here's what the stock 15", 16" and 17 tires compare to the 225/45/17 tires

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
215/45-17..... 3.8in... 12.3in..... 24.6in..... 77.3in..... 819........ 1.4%
205/55-16..... 4.4in... 12.4in..... 24.9in..... 78.2in..... 811........ 0.4%
195/65-15..... 5.0in... 12.5in..... 25.0in..... 78.5in..... 807........ 0.0%
225/45-17..... 4.0in... 12.5in..... 25.0in..... 78.5in..... 808........ 0.0%

if the 225 tires give more protection to the rims I may consider them because I scratched one of my rims because I parked too close from a concrete curb last summer. Is the Elantra computer programmed according to its rims size from factory? if my Elantra had stock 16'' rims and I replaced them with aftermarket 17'' rims does my computer still think it's 16'' rims and does it affect the speedo and MPG? this may be a stupid question lol

No it doesn't matter the size of the rims, it's the overall dimensions of the tire.

wider tires do negatively affect mileage but there are many other factors. Compound can make a huge difference. Soft sticky tires get worse gas mileage. Same size tires don't always weigh the same amount. Wider tires with larger sidewalls will always be heavier. Unsprung weight is always a performance and fuel economy killer.
My lowered car is fine in the snow. Even though I only live about 50 kms from Woodbridge we get more than 3 times as much snow as you. My lowered elantra has about the same ground clearance as my neighbour's stock 2010 civic.
