2013 Elantra click noise

My wife and I are new Elantra owners, car is just about to hit 9000 miles on it. I don't know when the noise started happening, but wasn't too long ago. My wife is okay with it, but as for me I find it rather annoying that the car is so new and already making noises. I call it a click but she describes it as a thunk.

Here's the details. The car is an automatic for starters. The noise mainly happens when accelerating from a dead stop. I'll be at a red light and when it turns green, I let the brake go and gently step on the gas and click...there is the noise. Its just a single click, loud enough to annoy me and loud enough that I could hear it when the radio volume is set to 12 or so.

It has also happened mid driving when I release the gas pedal to slow down without using the brakes. Right when I release it, I hear the click...once again a single click.

Now I have taken it to the dealer as a concern because that click wasn't there when I bought the car. They told me it was normal and after waiting 2 hours for a simple oil change to be completed I wasn't ready to argue with them. But I am getting to that point that I'm ready to argue with them, considering the car is so new and still under the warranty.

Can I get some help with this please? Arm me with something to tell them because I am clueless and I don't want to start diagnosing it myself since its under warranty. Also, I did try to search but my searches came up with nothing concrete. If someone knows another thread to read, please post it. And finally, thank you very much in advance.

Before you take the car in make sure you can re create the issue easily. If not they will probably never find a problem.

Suppose I could take the attendant for a drive, let him hear it. Not sure it happens at all when I'm in neutral, but I'll test that out soon.

They will almost certainly take your car on a test drive on their own to verify the complaint. It sounds to me (based on your description) that it's some sort of relay, although that doesn't really mean anything. I haven't heard any unusual noises in mine yet and certainly nothing like this. If the dealer can replicate the issue, they will be sure to find a solution.

Ruby2013Elantra. The click sound does not appear normal to me, so don't let the dealership convince you otherwise.

In terms of past threads, people have complained about various noises when braking, etc., but a singular click seems to be a first, at least for me.

Fashionista.

My wife's 2013 elantra also has a "clicking" noise. I attributed it to all the junk she has in the car. I'm gonna clean it out and see if its not loose change or something.

This was mentioned in a thread quite a while ago. My 2012 also suffers from the same thing, and I swear that I did not notice it until about 10,000 kms. I believe the consensus is the Shift Interlock Solenoid.
It is to keep you from shifting out of park unless you have your foot on the brake. When you press the brake a solenoid (what you hear clicking) releases the interlock so the shifter can be moved out of park. So, when you have your foot on the break and hit a very low speed, the interlock will click. Comes from somewhere down near the shifter / emergency brake, and when you accelerate away with no foot on the break, it clicks again.

So, what's the answer? New solenoid?

Not too sure, after a while with mine, I have come to live with it. I may press the stealer on my next visit to see what they say. I know mine was not that loud for the first couple of months, so a new solenoid should fix it.

These solenoids will all make some amount of noise and I am sure you friendly service advisor is going to say it is normal.
