If the car can tell if it's day or night, why doesn't it go ahead and turn the lights on and off for me? Am I doing something wrong here (I learned this the hard way by killing the battery the first time I drove at night). My Toyota Corolla S has automatic lights and it is in the same class and price category as the Elantra...but it also came with a spoiler too (but didn't come with a bunch of other features that won me over to the Elantra).
I actually hate the Auto Headlights on my '10 Corolla S that's why I disabled it but I kept the DRL feature. I hate when I drive through bridges for not that long and the lights come on then turn off immediately once there's light again.

You hate that...why?? I would love to have that feature. The problem on new cars is that the dash board light is so bright that people forget to turn their lights on and they drive at night with only their DRL and no tail lights on like idiots thinking their light are on. Pretty dangerous if you ask me... The only car I've had with this feature was my 1990 Pontiac Bonneville SSE and I loved it.

I have auto headlights on my Leaf, but you can choose to have them on auto or have them just plain on or off, as well as only have the parking lights on.

Got pretty dark and rainy today and saw some folks driving around without lights on.

Fashionista.

We bought our '12 GLS on March 13. About three weeks later they were selling '13 models. I kick myself for not knowing the new model was coming. We would have gotten heated seats with the Preferred Package.

Has anyone mentioned a mid cycle styling freshening? I don't think there has been any change since the '11 so I expect minor tweaks for the '14.

As for wish list I'm sure it won't happen until the redesign but the dash vents have to be moved up. They moved them up in the GT but I doubt they will do it for the sedan until the next generation debuts.

If only it had the option to turn off 'auto' then its good but for the Corolla once night time falls and you released the handbrake the headlights automatically turn on and sometimes when I'm idling I don't like to have my lights on. and to turn the lights off I have to shut off the car and that's it. no 'off' button like other cars with auto lights feature.

Most likely the '14 will have some slight tweaks when the refresh model comes out. As for the vents I actually like how they are right now, they look good and function well for me.

I'm hoping for LED tail lights for the 2014 MY and maybe some cooled/ventilated seats.

DRL as is in canada IS dangerous bad feature...see how many ppl driving at dusk/night with no taillights on! Thats what I hate the most!

If you have a lovely wife, sexy hot lover, cool car, no problems with the government and revenue authorities, and when you go out the sun always shines and all passers smile to you - common dude, say NO to drugs!

That's exactly my point. If all cars would be equipped with auto lights that turns on as soon as it's dark enough (dusk/night) then DRL would do the job they are supposed to do (mainly make vehicles more visible) during the day and no one would be driving with no taillights on when it's dark.

People forget to turn on their light not because of the DRL but because the dash indicators are already illuminated. I got tricked too.

I'm wondering why it's like that now, my previous car, a 2007, did not have illuminated dash during the day. I was surprised in the Elantra, no need to waste the life span of the bulbs during the day.

It's interesting how different manufacturers does this. In my 99 Corolla, the dash backlight is linked to the headlights. They both turn on and off together so there's no issues with the user not being sure if your headlights are on or off.

So in the Corolla, the light-stack column is set up as this. First position is all lights off (except for DRL, those are always on). Rotate once to second position to turn on dash lights and headlights. Rotate twice to third position to turn on high beams.

My wife drives a 2010 Honda Civic, the light controls are very different. First position is all lights off except DRL. Rotate once to second position to turn on the dash lights only. Rotate twice to third position to turn on headlights. Push column forward to turn on high beams.

So the first couple of times I drove my wife's Civic, I was really confused. The worst part is, the Civic has an indicator on the dash to let you know if the headlights are on except the symbol they used is IDENTICAL to the high-beam symbol in my Toyota. When I drove my wife's Civic, I would turn the light switch to the second position thinking the headlights are also turned on and drive without the headlights at night like an idiot because I always assumed the third position was the high beams!

Also the bulbs in my Corolla were terribly old and I never replaced them so they were ridiculously dim, and the DRL's in my wife's Civic were as bright as my Corolla's regular headlights. It was an all-around fail on my part.
