you are luck you have the DRL's properly working I cannot wait to hear the dealers explanation tonight when I go. They should never have advertised them as being standard on the car, and the fact that the parking lamps go on with them is nonsense. But from what I see here this is a pointless battle. I just wonder if they can program the computer to be in "Canadian" mode for me... since I will be moving there eventually...

Assume you are running down the road at 60MPH and getting 40MPG with no DRL's or headlights. By my rough calculations, turning the headlights on will reduce the MPG by ~.5MPG, slightly more with the other lighting that comes on at the same time. I know that most of us don't care much about 1/2 MPG, but with all the complaints about the Elantra not getting it's published MPG, I'd bet that the Hyundai marketers/engineers made this change to improve it just a little. Not the choice I would make. I'm glad I have an early 2012 model with real DRL's.

Very true! The dealer told me as expected "that's just how they work on hyundais" and nAturally my glove box would not open itself when they drove it so im hoping it fixed itself somehow...

Just got a 2013 Elantra GT today - couldn't figure out why the DRL's wouldn't come on. Did a Search and found this thread. Now I know I'm not alone. But I am still upset - what an asinine way to have DRL's operate.

I just took delivery of a 2013 GLS with the preferred package and no DRL's so they still have not got the problem fixed. I bought mine 150 miles away because my local dealer was such a bunch of jerks. I guess I will contact the dealer and see what they say but after reading 13 pages, I am not hopeful. My 2011 Sonata has DRL's that really work.

My 2013 Limited (no tech package) turns on the high beams under low power when I have the lights set to parking lights and my hand brake is off. If I pull the hand brake on it turns off the high beams and leaves the parking lights on. Only issue is it dims all the internal lights in the car. So I end up not using it during the day and only during the evening/early morning. Hardly DRL's...

Ok, my 2013 Preferred package also doesn't seem to have DRLs that turn on without the parking lights.

My question The drl does not come on unless the parking lights are on, why is this? Why the change to have parking lights on with drl??

Hyundai's answer lol

"Hyundai values your opinions and we appreciate you taking the time to contact us with your comments and suggestions regarding the design of your vehicle. We try to design and equip all of our models with materials and features that will appeal to our current and potential customers. Some of the factors that are evaluated during vehicle design and production include demand, safety, durability, efficiency, comfort, convenience and aesthetics. We are sometimes unable to produce an automobile with the features and materials that will satisfy or appeal to all of our customers.

As stated in a prior email The DRL in your 2013 Elantra are automatic. The only way to turn them off is to turn the headlights on, stop the engine, set the multifunction switch to the "DRL OFF" position or put the parking break on. This information can be found in the Owner's Manual for your 2013 Elantra in section 4 page 63. "

Uh yea I'm pretty sure I know how to read a manual, thanks for answering my question.

1badsr, I think they answered you wrong. The DRL's are not automatic. The only way you can turn them on is by turning the light switch to parking lights. On my 2011 Sonata the DRL's were on whenever I started the engine and released the E-brake. No other lights were on. I consider this a safety issue with the new Elantras and think that Hyundai needs to come out with a fix. I specifically told my dealer that I wanted the lights reprogrammed to be like the Sonata and they said they would talk to a reginal rep. I am not holding out for much hope though.

Yea there's probably not much hope in getting this issue fixed. They cant even give me a straight answer on my question besides telling me to go read the manual lol.
