Question iPod Touch issues on 2012 Elantra Limited

So I purchased a 2012 Elantra Limited last night (10/17/2011). Before starting my commute to work this morning, I plugged in my 3g iPod touch to find that somehow the Elantra re-initialized my iPod within minutes.

I did a search on the Quick Reference Guide and on pg. 26 it states "To operate your iPod through the vehicle's audio system, a Hyundai adapter cable is required. This cable can only be purchased at your local Hyundai dealer."

My questions are:
1. Has anyone experienced this situation with an iPod or any other mp3 player?
2. Is the Hyundai adapter cable required for iPod use?
3. Does anyone have a workaround without having to buy the Hyundai adapter cable?

As a follow up note, I did upgrade to the latest firmware on the iPod before plugging it into the Elantra USB port. Perhaps this might be my root cause for the re-initialization, which removed all of my music and applications from the iPod.

FYI, the Hyundai IPOD cable has the 3.5mm jack(i believe that is the size) along with a USB connection on the same end. The other end plugs into the IPOD.

After reading the Owner's Manual 4-115:
The Hyundai iPod Power Cable is needed in order to operate iPod with the audio buttons on the audio system. The USB cable provided by Apple may cause malfunction and should not be used for Hyundai vehicles.

So this is another possible explanation as to why my iPod was re-initialized. Regardless, it looks like I have to buy the Hyundai iPod cable.

Unfortunately yes, you will need the iPod cable from Hyundai if you want it to be integrated into the head unit/steering wheel. I tried with the Apple cable initially as well, and although it didn't reset my iPod, it didn't work either. My iPod would just crash and restart, and the car would say something like "accessory reconnection required". (Still happens sometimes even with the Hyundai cable, heh) If you only want the sound and don't change through songs a lot, you can always use a double-ended 3.5mm aux cable

Honestly I really hate the IPOD interface in the Elantra.
I do have the ipod cable that came with the car and as soon as the ipod is plugged in it will start up playing MP3's, which is all well and good till you want to do something else.

For example, I want to play a video for a passenger on my iphone (so they can watch while I drive) but have the audio play over the speaker system. No go with the ipod interface, it will keep trying to play MP3's. In fact the only way I can get it to function in the way I desire is to NOT use the ipod cable and instead use a separate male-male audio jack with aux-in.

On top of this I think the controls for the interface I don't find very user friendly either. I can not use the audio wheel when in track selection mode to do fast scrolls of my library or playlists but have to click through them using the up/down buttons. Really frustrating when you are trying to find a specific track in the middle of a large listing.

Sucks, my hubby got his iPod cable complimentary when he got his Genesis, but I, on the other hand, did not. So I plugged my Shuffle in with the iPod cord and it works, but it always plays from the beginning every time I turn on the car. :<

For playing music, I found putting all my songs on a $6 usb memory stick is much more user friendly than using an ipod touch via the ipod cable. I have songs saved in folders on the usb stick by artist, album & favorites. The audio controls on the head unit and steering wheel make it easy to navigate. I leave the usb stick plugged in all the time - only taking it out if I want to load new content.

With this option available to us, I'm not sure why Hyundai even bothered putting a CD player in the car... I know I will never use music CD's again in my car.

I recently purchased a Elantra Gt, 2013. I use my apple cable with only the usb port; however, I believe this is a recent update to the Elantra audio system. The dash still has the micro plug outlet next to the usb port. The car system is hard wired; however, it probably has a computer interface. If so, you may be able to get a system update for your Elantra. Call the dealer and speak with the service tech.

Does anybody know if you can search you iPod, while patched into the Elantra, for a song you want to hear? For me to do it, I have to unplug my ipod touch 4 and bring it up on the player than plug it back in. Pain in the A... Not to mention dangerous if done while in motion, which is when I most often get an itch for a certain song.
