2011 Elantra Upstream O2 sensor

My car decided to start chugging while driving around town and got worse on the highway. The check engine light came on.....right as we were passing the local Hyundai dealer. Of course. It was chugging so bad I thought it was going to die in the middle of the highway, so I reluctantly pulled over.

They said the upstream O2 sensor failed and needed replacing. I can't afford the hundreds of dollars they would charge for the part and labor, so decided to see if we could do it ourselves. We found the sensor but cannot figure out how to disconnect it. There's nothing on Youtube. There's nothing on Google. It's all for older Elantras. I don't want to break the sensor and then have to eat crow and go back to the dealer to fix everything.

It's a 2011 Hyundai Elantra Limited 1.8 Liter 4 Cylinder.

Thank you for any suggestions.

Never done this car but you typically need a special socket for 02 sensor. It's got a big slot on one side, just found mine the other day when cleaning out the toolbox. Maybe somebody else can give better advice, after 5+ years I'm still in the if "it ain't broke" leave it alone thinking method. Welcome to the forum

I saw that a special tool is needed for the part that screws into the engine, but this is the plastic part of the sensor on the opposite end. I'll probably just end up taking it back to the dealer. I'd hate to do more damage. lol! Thank you.
