Hello all, I thought it would be nice to have all the 2011 Elantra related problems in one place. It will make it easier for all current or future owners to know about all the problems in one place instead of searching all over the entire Forum.

I will go first:
Problems: my electric power steering went off two times and my sunroof was leaking in carwash.
Solution: the dealer reprogrammed the EPS computer and aligned the sunroof glass, up to now the power steering works well and no more leaking sunroof.

For me :

The engine is making weird and loud sounds.. I'm at 10 feet of the car and it sounds like a TDI. Will seriously have to take an appointment to make the tech verify the car and tell me a second time that everything is fine. The supposed normal injection sound is LOUD, more than my old 1.6L.

Tonight I switch for the summer tires. I was searching for the ---> rotation logo on the continental tires and didn't found it. So I took a look at the design of the tires and the littles WAVES design on the side. All the 4 tires are mounted on the alloys the same side ? So I have 2 tires okay and 2 that they will need to switch. On dry roads I don't care but on the water it wont be the same game. Don't want the car to respond badly. Did you all have the tires the good way ? Can someone post me a pic of the right way ? Because If someone tell me that it doesn't matter okay but normaly theres a side to install them ? They come on the car from the plant to the dealer. Was removed from the car to be replaced by a winter set mounted on steel rims. It's probably not the dealer fault but are they will accept to change them for me or saying that they are right mounted... hmmm !

For the rest, everything is fine by now. No carwash leak, no EPS problems.

No problems so far, although I do hear some cold-weather squeaking in the gas pedal where it safety-hinges to the floor (thank you, Toyota). I'll hit it with the silicone spray one of these days and hopefully that'll be the end of it.

PS: Consolidating all complaints in one thread is a great idea that will probably last about three minutes :p

I had a slight idle problem twice but seemed to have gone away. It happened while at a stop light. Little vibration but only if you really paid attention to it. It's been at least a month since and haven't happened since.

Most noticable big problem. While in traffic other cars not clearing way for me to change lanes as they are gawking at my car  I ain't kidding!

Ok, here I go.

1- Paint is chipping off at the bottom back of rear doors. Rock chips have taken it down to the metal. It took 3 years for those to form on my Tucson.
2-3 paint chips. One on the passenger rear door nder the handle, 12 on the drivers side front quarter panel. All 3 are down to the metal. No clue how this could happen.
3- Avaeraging 12 - 16 kms /100L. 4000 KMs on the car and the mileage still hasnt improved
4- Drivers window either rolls all the way down or up no matter how slight I touch the switch. Havent figured out how to fix this yet. Dealer says its normal? Thers no halfway point
5-Ticking sound in the engine, sounds almost like a diesel

The paint is what is the most frustrating right now. The Glacier White was suppossed to be a 3 coat paint, but there is no way it is and for it to chip in places there is no way a rock can hit and for the paint to strip this quickly at the back on the bottom of the rear doors is even more disturbing. I have only had the car 3 months and the paint is toast, cant wait to see it in a year.

Otherwise, we love this car. The ride is better once I noticed our bonehead dealer did not chech the tire pressure. it was at 45 psi. Once I let it down to 35 it improved drastically.

I took the car on a 2000 km road trip throughout Alberta and it drove beautifully. The mileage sucked, but I did manage to get 500kms out of a tank of gas on the highway. My sisters 2011 Civic got 700 on the same size tank though.

The pickup when passing was decent as well. My parents were in a 2010 Focus and my Uncle in a 2010 Sonata(both rentals) and they were impressed when I left them in the dust a few times. I took the car up to 160 kms an hour before the front end starting shaking. Not to shabby for a 4 banger!

Occasional issues hooking up with bluetooth with my iPhone! Think it is the iPhone causing the issue but who knows?
Try updating you iphone software, I find the elantra picks up my iphone better and faster than our santa fe, and i don't get that obnoxious "connection complete" all the time.

As for problems, just the **** spare tire noise when i go over bumps.

I was wondering the same thing about tire rotation, the dealer did not write anythig on the tires to let me know on which side they go. isn't it too soon for summer tires? I am waiting in april to make sure no more snowfall, il va y avoir la tempête des corneilles........

Vince, if your tires don't have an arrow on them, they can be mounted anywhere.

Unidirectional tires have an arrow on them indicating the direction they should be turning.

Most tires these days are not unidirectional. So when doing your regular tire/wheel rotation, they can be can switched to either side.

Okay but the way the tire is designed, theres a difference. One side the water will go out. On the other side, the water will stay in the tire. Theres no arrow for the direction, but theres a tire 'thread' ? The tire is full of littles 'WAVES' de signe on the side. on my conductor side, the waves are going foward when rolling. On the other side, the waves are inverted. That's why I mention that. I will take some pictures today. Will post them, you'll see what I mean.

Xion : I know it's soon a bit but I'm going to Quebec city this week end and I didn't want to make 650 kms and more on the wintertires on warm roads. And for the last snowfall, as we always have each year, I'm not affraid because the tires are '4 seasons'. They are made for light snow, slush and water. I know that i'll have to be more careful if driving into this conditions. 3 years ago I did install the lowprofiles 17s on my accent oneday. Went to a friend house to install the HIDs on it in is garage. 2 hours later, open the garage door ! what the *** !! It was 2 - 3 inchs on the ground haha.

Did Laval / Vaudreuil at a slower speed and no problem. If the tires are new, I trust them. The dealership of coiteux did transfer the car from repentigny, the only black gls was there. They did the transfer of 30 kms in a snowstorm and the guy told me that the tires was really good. I was just sad to know that it wasnt Hankook brand !

I first test drove the car in some snow and found them really good as well. This weekend I'm going to Longueuil, 155 KM, on my snow tires. I always put my summer tires in mid april, there are 5 season in Quebec, we have entered the Pothole season hahaha.......

So the little waves show different direction on opposite sides? That's your answer, Vince. They work at optimum on either side of your car. The tread is designed for both directions.

Heres the pictures.. Sorry but paintbrush on touchpad isnt easy :p

Hope you'll see what I mean with the pics.

The tire is made to evacuate the water. On 1 side, the water will go out.
On the other side, the thread isn't on the good side, si the water will just STAY in the lines, no evacuations.

I saw that the tires are the same on each side. Outside, inside. BUT, it's inverted. To get it right (all tire water evacuations lines to the same side) I had to reverse the mags to get it right.

Theres 2 tires that they will need to remove the tire from the rim and switch from left to right on the mag before reinstall it.

Vince, I understand your concern, but here is why you shouldn't worry.

You're thinking that your tire treads look like this, and that half of them are backwards.

//\\

But what you probably have is more like this, and half them only appear backwards because you're viewing them from the opposite side.

\\\\

The second type (bi-directional) expel water in one direction (either the driver's side or the passenger side of the vehicle) regardless of how they are mounted, so reversing two of them won't change anything. Go ahead and try it with scraps of paper.

If the tires were directional, there should be an arrow and something like "rotation or direction" on the sidewall. Those tires are typically used on higher performance cars. My Genesis for example has tires that are directional and sized differently front to rear, so I can't rotate them. They get worn, they get replaced lol.

As for issues with my Elantra... BT sometimes takes it's time to connect with my iPhone and the left lower bolster digs into my fat left leg, but that's it.

Okay I trust you but why the 'waves' drawing on the side of the tire is the same but reversed on each side of each tires ?

It's just because of the symbol that's inverted that I'm affraid. I installed once two tires the wrong side and it was orrible driving when it was raining.

So you told me that the water will just get out by inside the tire for one side instead of by outside without causing any troubles? I'll cancel my appointment if you say

This is a TOP view

Left side of car Right side of car

Front wheels | | --> | | -->

Rear Wheels | | --> | | -->

--> = The way that the water will go out

Hard to do better than that haha

Exactement!

The only reason for the difference in the waves is that on one side you're looking at "water intake" but on the other side you're looking at "water exhaust".

I have the same problems. Car was vibrating at stop lights, dropped it off at the dealer yesterday. Will let you know what it may have been. Also, people DO gawk at it while I drive by, it's very entertaining to watch.

Gawk at it means that people is watching a lot ??

I just washed the car yesterday, 1st time a hand job. The other times was in automatic pressure water carwash and it wasn't removing all the dust on lit in the bottom of the doors.

I did 1h in traffic from home o my girlfriend apparment and there was a LOT of people watching the black beauty shiny little car !

They probably all say : HUH, a hyndai ?? Woah !!
