Yeah, here in the US we get a can of fix-a-flat and a tire inflator pump that plugs into the cigarette lighter instead of a spare tire. The reduced weight is to help improve MPG. I can't imagine the weight of a spare tire can make that much of a difference.
I think it's becoming more common. I looked at a Chevy Cruze and it didn't have one either. Read that the new Ford Focus has ommited it as well.
The spare is something that I hope to never have to use. But, I feel more comforatable having it. I know we have the 24-hour roadside assistance an all. But by the time I called and someone got out to me, I could have the spare on and be on my way.
