fuel burp after filling

Hey guys,

daughter got a new car 2010 accent gls. It burps fuel after every fill up (after the fuel nozzle shuts off like it should) and runs down the side of the car... sounds like hyundai has problems with this on a few different models. This is the first non-gm vehicle in our family. I grew up working with them and driving them and know them well.

Anyway, looks like 3 different parts here:

Having this same issue on my daughters 2010 Accent GLS. It burps up fuel after the fuel shuts off on the pump. Which exact part do I need?

Vapor Canister

Vapor Canister Purge Valve / Solenoid

Vapor Canister Vent Valve / Solenoid

I'm assuming it's the vent valve solenoid, I've got the part on order. Looks easy to replace and I will be pulling the canister box down and taking a look when I replace it. I'll check everything with air (blowing into it ect...).

Has anyone resolved this issue?

On a side note, combined fuel economy is 36.5mpg. I would expect that though, small engine, small car ect...

Measure across sensor pins ohms should be between 23-26. Hyundai would command it on with an advanced scan tool and check for voltage and ground switching by computer then test sensor by supply a ground to body to trigger it to close and hold vacuum. If the vacuum gauge needle moves to 0 when body ground is connected the sensor is bad and needs replacing.

Thanks, I ordered that part already figuring that was the issue. Pretty cheap on rock auto.com. I will check all of the other vents/valves as well. What site are you referring to for the fuel air filter? That could def. be an issue too.

Thank you!

In my signature below. Take you to all the Hyundai videos 2006-2011 accent all models. Make sure when filling when the handle clicks stop next time. Topping off or rounding off can flood the charcoal canister and damage it resulting in a Very EXPENSIVE bill. These things are closer to the 1000 mark.

Yep, never top off tank after it's filled up. I took that valve off and replaced it. But before replacing it, I used compressed air to clean out both hose leads. I could hear the tank bulge a bit so I didn't put too much in there. I did see some crap fly out when i blew the lead up to where the vent is for the gas neck. I'm feeling pretty good that this was resolved. This vent valve was actually in a different location, it was right next to the charcoal cansert box, thank god it was outside of it. It was easy to replace. 2 hose clamps and the sensor wires. I'll keep you posted on results.

I've replaced the evap sensor on my 2004 silveardo once due to this same type of issue.

Appears this did not resolve the issue. I find that strange as I was able to blow air into the tank through the charcoal filter and then up through the vent tube (after removing this inline breather valve.)

Looks like I'll have to remove some big metal cover to get to the charcoal box.

You're implying that I test the new sensor to ensure it opens? Can I just use a 12v feed with ground to do so?

Yes if its a pscv you have. I thought you replaced the char can sensor? I was just moving on to other parts of the system. As stated in my first replies. The sensor near canister is usually the burp gas issue problem. It stays closed at key off not allow air to escape when you fill the car. Imagine trying to filk your lawn tractor with a red cherry can with gas. Keep the tiny black valve closed on the cherry can. The gas barely comes out! A hard no start usually is the pscv fault. Testing costs 0 bucks. Replacing parts is not smart without testing. Always test sensor and volts on the plug side as well as the switched ground as most sensors on this car are grd switched on by the computer.

Understood. I replaced the Vapor Canister Vent Valve / Solenoid.

I'm assuming that still isn't working.

I understand the logic on this, so the valve should be opened when the car's ignition is off? With it on, it should close, correct? I can test all of that. I also have a test light and will try to test if this works on the wire end of the Vapor Canister Vent Valve / Solenoid harness (2 wire plug).

You can test by applying v and grd 12v safe. Apply vacuum. Should Hold when v applied on the ccv. At rest should be open. No vacuum. Im guessing the valve is not opening or air blockage in the air fuel filter line. Burping can also be caused by a bad char canister. Not sure if there is a test to test the canister. These things cost a ton money.

I've noticed that. I'd probably bypass the charcoal filter and put a smaller universal one in. I can cobble if needed :)

not sure if this issue was resolved or not yet...but if not I was looking at my old warranty receipts because I did have this issue with my 2010 Accent. The dealer replaced the "fuel shut-off valve" that was back in 2012 and the car has been fine ever since. Hope this helps!
