This week I noticed a sound that sounds low that increases then the vehicle goes faster and decreases when it slows down. It is not wheel bearing noise. Took a doctors type scope and put it on the pulleys listening for the bearing noise in each pulley and found my alternator pulley making more noise than usual, My car needs new accessory belts so I ordered 3 new belts and will be replacing them soon. Im hoping the noise is from worn belts and not the alternator. If it is the alternator its going to cost me 250 bucks for a rebuilt one. Im sure I can shop around and get it cheaper. I'm not sure if I can tear the alternator apart and replace the part bearing part. Have to look into this. Is this normal for a car with 161 thousand klm for accessory belt bearings on items to start to go bad? I sure hope the water pump and power steering and ac compressor and ac tensioner last. These all have bearings in them as well.
Ill keep you updated on this post and if I need to replace the alternator (Which is working fine as for charging) then I will make a video on replacement. It is very simple to remove and install.
Good luck rebuilding the alternator. Last one I tried to rebuild due to bad bearings ('97 Ford) I could not separate the back of the alternator case as the diodes were solder directly in to it. Tracing the noise down was very hard as the alternator body transmitted the sound all through the engine block.
No but im all over the states..... Ill have to pop into autozone or napa and price them out. Just watched an alernator rebuild video. I think ill go the rebuild way(store rebuild). The scope really pinpoints noise if you probe around. I dont feel like getting under the car til next week. Plus, tanny flush, coolant flush and belts will fill my day. Think this time I will leave the tranny pan on and flush.
It sounds like hmmmmmm to speed then slowing whhaaaaaammmmmm. Does not change when I turn steering wheel left and right. Usually a bearing will stop sounding when turning wheel side to side.
Mine made/makes the most noise when turning the wheel slightly at speed. Or when going over a bump and compressing the suspension. I replaced the drivers side bearing and now that side does not make noise when turning slightly to the left. When turning slightly to the right the passenger side will then growl.
If I had a wireless scope I find it in a sec. I don't want to pay 300 bucks to find the sound so I'm paying 29 bucks to get it diagnosed. If it's bad tire cords they are under replacement warranty. Bought tires December
I got new winter tires last fall and thought that is what the sound was, added air so the tire was not running so much on the square sidewall and the noise was less. Got new summer tires and put them on this spring and the noise was even louder. A month ago it started to make a weird variable wining noise, then a couple days later a loud knock. By then the hub was loose as a goose. Hard to diagnose but I thought it was tire noise for sure and it wasn't.
Yep right wheel bearing. It's JUST starting to go. Guess my new 20 ton press and camcorder will be getting some use. Hyundai repair videos at my expense.... Lol
