It seems to me the 1.5CRDI VGT engine as fitted in the Matrix must be 3 cylinder!
Do the math = pi x bore/2 x bore/2 x stroke x 3 cylinder = 1495cc
All the Specifications gave 4 valves per cylinder - never seen 3 valves x 3 cylinders, 3 cylinders x 4 vales = 12 valve engine. If someone thought it was 4 cylinder, they might have figured 12/4 = 3 vales per pot?
It would seem the 'early' 1.5l CRDI engine in the Matrix only produced 60kW (81bhp) and gave 182 Nm @ 2,000 rpm.
There is a newer CRDI VGT engine giving extra 20bhp (which is almost like having a 4th cylinder over the output of previous version).
So New 1.5 3 cylinder, 4 valves per cylinder CRDi engine gives 75 kW (102 HP) and a maximum torque of 235 Nm.
0 to 100 km/h in 14.3 seconds and a maximum speed of 164 km/h.
The average consumption is indicated as 5,4 litres of Diesel on 100 km

My German is not very good, so I had the webpage literally 'translated' into English via http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/tr
"Particularly at recent families the Hyundai is matrix for years likes. The variable Korean can be pleased now about December width unit a Facelift and an achievement syringe. The diesel engine has thanks of variable load geometry immediately 75 kW/102 HP.
Hyundai Santa Fe and Tucson before-made it: Variable loader geometry brings momentum into the Diesel pallet of Hyundai. With the Familienvan Hyundai matrix can be pleased the driver immediately about a cylinder more, 75 kW/102 HP and a maximum torque of 235 Nm.
So far the model had to get along with schlappen three pots and 20 HP less. The further road performances matrix 1,5 CRDi VGT: 0 to 100 km/h in 14.3 seconds and a maximum speed of 164 km/h. Those are not peak values, should however most drivers contently place. The average consumption is indicated as 5,4 litres of Diesel on 100 km. Unfortunately also the new engine creates still only euro 3.
Optically the front was easily expenditure-blown. New headlights and a changed radiator grille stand for that matrix well to face. The trunk volume amounts to between 354 and 1.284 litres. The entrance price for the Hyundai matrix 1,5 CRDi GLS is with 16.680 euro. In the past year Germany far over 6.800 Hyundai matrix were sold".
Want to know what a Matrix fitted with this latest engine might be like for towing?
Again using Babelfish to convert this Dutch page into English:-

Europe seem to have had this engine since 2004?
I should be getting to test drive a Hyundai Matrix 1.5 CRDi VGT with 75kW (102bhp) engine on Monday here in Cebu, Philippines. I was assured by the dealer it was this latest engine - and it's not available with the electric sunroof that seems to be standard Spec in Europe.
Let you know what I think of the Drive.

[b]The new engine was annoanced some months ago also on different car news portals.
the 4 valves 1.5 CRDi is reality. I collected above information from european official Hyundai pages, eg. www.hyundai.at, ge, .sk, .cz, but also from kia pages, as same engine is offered in Kia Cerato for example.
Half a year ago the Matrix was offered still with 3 valve diesel engine also in Europe, that's why I wanted to raise your attention - I know this because that time I was choosing my car, finally an Accent.
Best wishes, Attila
