Sigh. Car went off on a Towing Rig today..

Oy.

The day no one wants to deal with. Lets grab a little history first though.

So, a while back- say about 7 months ago my 2.0T would hesitate a little to start. As in- turn over more then a half second tops and fire. We're talking about 2-4 seconds of cough cough sputter fire. It usually happened about once a month- if not longer inbetween that badly. As of late- a bit more frequent. I've had it to the dealer- and made note of it. Of course- "it started fine for us, there's no error or trouble codes in the ECU". Of course.

SO, fast track to today. (fairly confident it's related). Car starts with the slightest cough. No big issue- continue on errands today. Drive a couple places- runs great like always, start stop off/on etc. Get to the last destination- visit my dad's for fathers day. Get back in- starts fine- roll down the road- get it up to about 50mph- stumble- stumble.. hesitation with the engine. You can feel it misfiring. I pulled off on a side street. She's shaking pretty bad, engine is misfiring like mad. Barely holds 500rpms- doesn't die but it doesn't really want to run either. I can smell unburnt gas. She's sounding like shes running on 3 cyl. I get it fired again- start to go back to the parent's house. Check engine light is on. Misfire misfire. Called in for Hyundai's tow service and shes gone to the dealer in 30 mins. .

I get to find out what's up tomorrow- 39k on the clock. Bad injector? Fouled plug? EH? guesses?

There was someone else that had similar issues and they had all the injectors replaced.
Push the dealer to change the oil as well since you can smell unburnt gas that means the oil is gas fouled and will not lubricate as well.

From you thread title I thought your car fell off a tow truck. lol
Good luck with the repair and keep us up to date.

I have a 2.4L but my car does "cough cough sputter fire" thing occasionally as well. Happens probably once every few weeks but it is starting to worry me. Haven't brought it to the dealers attention since there is a 99% chance they will not be able to reproduce it and won't care very much. Do a lot of people have this problem?

Exactly. That's why when I brought it up twice at two different dealers- they simply state that they cannot reproduce the issue. The dealer initially blames it on "bad gas". I doubt it.. but its a fair bet.. kinda.

But my thoughts are when they figure this out that might stop. I'll keep everyone in the know here.

Well... the tow service wasn't able to get the car to the dealer- locked gates on a Sunday. First thing in the morning they said. I called ahead at 8am to get the service call in. Called around 2pm to check status- nothing- THEY CAN'T FIND MY CAR- he said he would call back- I called them again to get a voicemail of the service adviser that took my call. Then I get an update that my roadside service is in "transit". Seems the tow service didn't want to move the car for a day almost until Hyundai approved another tow BACK to the DEALER. .. sigh. ONE DAY DOWN! They got the car, and I'm cruising in a Santa Fe 2017 with 700 miles on it. Looks like a base model..... dual exhaust... dual climate.... everything else plabian.

Lol no.

Maybe 60-50 DTE which usually involves only 14 gallons in the 18.5 gallon tank. Don't get me started on that one. I know about it all too well.. and the whole "venting" thing.

This happens with a full tank of gas, half, qtr, 3/4. Doesn't matter. Doesn't seem to depend on weather either.

The number one worst time I've ever had it stutter-start was on a -10 degree 3-35 below F windchill night.. I and two others were cold and the thing did that. Scared me to death- like it wasn't going to start in that cold of weather. Nope, just being it's silly self.

Hopefully the dealer will straighten things out for you.
Good that you have a loaner SUV for now.
I drove about a 2015 model and rear visibility was horrible.
If it wasn't for the backup camera I bet that car wouldn't have a straight corners in the rear.

I had this issue. Long story short, one of your fuel injectors failed prematurely, You will need all new fuel injectors, new spark plugs. probably cylinder 3 or 4.

I knew someone here had this issue.
Has your car had any issues since the repair?
