Exhaust Pipe Finish

Hey Guys, take a look at the attached pics of my two exhaust pipes. Any idea whats going on with the left one? It appears to be losing its black finish and honestly it looks like crap. If anyone knows why this might be happening or what I can do to prevent it from getting worse, please let me know.

I'm not sure how long its been going on for but I just noticed it after my 30k mile service last weekend. Wonder if some additive they put in may have caused it or they tried to clean the build up off of it and accidentally took off the finish. Thanks

I think the black stuff is carbon build up. Aren't these things supposed to be satin silver? The VW guys use #00 steel wool or this eagle one trim polish that comes in a navy blue tin. Found in the auto detail section.

I'm not sure. There is some carbon build up near the bottom of both tips but I think the majority of the black stuff on the inside is supposed to be there.

Black stuff is supposed to be there, just checked ours at only 6200 miles. Our 2015 LF at 15,000 miles had rust on the metallic part of the muffler with the inner black finish starting to decay.

I am thinking of spraying the black part of the muffler with high temp flat paint to help protect the finish? Thoughts?

Makes sense.

I'm not sure the exhaust at the finisher is all that hot anyway.

You might get by with normal paint or plasit-dip (or maybe not), but it would be hard to go wrong with flat black bbq grille paint.

Hmm I'm not sure. Can anyone with more experience let me know if this is something warranty would cover? I'm thinking no since it's cosmetic.

I'm also thinking no b/c it's cosmetic, but I could be wrong.

Fortunately, it shouldn't take long for the dealer to let you know and shouldn't be something that you have to pay a diagnostic fee for them to look at and evaluate it.

Yea might be worth calling and asking. Provided its not covered, would this paint work?
