Have you ever heard an AEB alarm?

I have started a case with Hyundai on AEB. I am convinced that AEB is not working in my 2017 Sonata. I have 8 dash-cam video's of test's I have conducted testing close encounters with objects and people in which I did not receive any alarms or brake applications.

My local dealer and a Hyundai rep say that the system is operating normally and it is too dangerous to test or demonstrate. It seems to me that their position is I need to have an accident before I will know if it is working or not.

It would help my case if there is anyone on this forum that has any experience with AEB working or not.

I receive forward collision alerts / beeps which appear in the center of the instrument panel on the screen. I have the delay set to long in the settings. I receive alerts just before hard braking in rush hour highway traffic. I also have received alerts when doing a fast lane change into a right turn lane behind a car that is in the turn lane. I never had an instance where the car actually braked for me. I have had the car for about 2 months now.

I have had the warning on numerous occasions, but my foot is already on the brake, and I have never had it override what I was doing.

That said, there were 2 occasions, where it felt like it was starting to kick in, but again as I was already breaking, it's hard to be 100% sure. But the warnings were definite.

I have the 2016 Limited, Tech and Ultimate packages.

I have had my 2017 Limited 2.0t for about 2 weeks, and I had AEB go off once. I was following a line of car planning to pass, and the cars stopped to make a left hand turn. I was just moving to the brake and the front alert screen popped up on the screen and the alert sound went off. I braked normally within a half second.

Thanks for the reply - If I can ask, what setting do you have for the AEB (fast-normal-slow) And at what distance would you say you were behind the car in front of you when the alarm first went off.

I can't seem to be able to get an alarm with my car.

Thanks

I should add that AEB is able to apply full braking force between around 6-50MPH. After that. It's up to you. No visual warnings may display - just an audible tone, is likely. Pre-charging braking systems is possible, still .

Even when AEB initiates full braking force, there's no guarantee the system will be able to avoid a collision entirely - though, mitigation is better than no help at all.

There are many situations in which the sensor and camera may not be able to detect an object or vehicle correctly or fast enough to intervene: examples would be something like, driving on a curve, slope or changing lanes quickly. Vehicles with cargo extending out from back of their vehicle is another example. For pedestrian detection, the camera may have trouble seeing the person when sun is bright and directly facing he car. Radar alone may or maybe not detect the person. Also, if person isn't standing completely upright, blends with background or appears abruptly in the cameras line of sight - it's unlikely system will detect in time to stop let alone warn.

I have a 2016 HSH limited.. mine goes off. It also goes off on steep down hills at times and around curves seeing the other car come at me (only once or twice). So mine works but it just beeps like crazy.. no braking. My auto cruise will stop my car. The AEB just beeps and the screen shows something.

I finally had the AEB definitively demonstrated.

I was stopped in traffic, and it then started moving. I accelerated, and the car in front didn't speed up as fast as I expected, so I began approaching the car (low speed, obviously). I saw/heard the usual warning that has occurred from time to time, but as I was braking manually, the pedal felt differently, and it seemed like it was operating independently of my foot. It then fully stopped, and on the front LCD, it said "Emergency Breaking Completed" or similar words to that effect. They only stayed there a few seconds, but I had never seen that before, and seems to confirm that this actually works!

FWIW.

fwiw wife said the AEB chirped at her because the car in front of her did a late right turn. Did not notice if car was braking as she started to.

I was using the SCC and that gets me hard! Car was braking while traffic slowed down on curve on rural highway, slowed down to 30 km/h then kicked to accelerate back up to highway speed.
Kept saying to wife "I'm not braking"

That is "works as intended", really. They have tweaked it a bit in the two times my computer firmware was updated (MY15 Genny), but it is still pretty much the same as the way it was delivered except it doesn't "lock up" for a panic stop, it works more like (and sounds like) ABS 'firing'. I remember an early Chevy Blazer (96 I think) had a problem with ABS and it was constantly making clicking sounds even when it didn't need to work (but did too often). The sound is hard to describe, but more or less like it firing 100 times per second. I suppose "rapid fire"? Anyway, the Genny MY15 never mistakenly fires like it did brand new. That was fixed in the first firmware fix applied around May 2015 when it was actually a year old, since it was available in early June 2014. I suspect it was the code for the MY16 ported to the MY15?

The second firmware code update applied about a year later fixed the occasional problem with vehicles being followed around a curve on 2 lane roads making it cut out the (fake, drive by wire) gas peddle.

Funny after I read this thread, I set mine (on my 2018) from Normal to Fast. Not two miles later, the warning went off. (I already had my foot on the brake).

As I understand it, (and I could be wrong) even though the warning alarm sounds, the brakes only go on once you step on the brake, however it then brakes hard without you having to push harder. I could be wrong. My 2015 does not have this feature.

No, it will break without any touch of the brake pedal - guaranteed!

I had a 2016 Tucson Limited with the tech package. The AEB system worked as it's supposed to, warning with beeps and visually on dash, then lastly with automatic braking.
I just traded that vehicle in on a 2018 Elantra Gt Sport with the Tech package.
I could not get the AEB to engage in any way under any circumstance.
I brought it in to the dealer.. I was informed that Hyundai changed how it operates. I was told the cruise control must be on for it to work. They said they did not know why it was changed to this and agreed with me that it makes zero sense.... so driving around town I would need to engage the cruise control for the AEB to work, and each time I touch the break I would need to start cruse control again to continue use of the AEB?This is the epitome of WTF?!?!
Mind you, nothing about the cruise control is mentioned in the owners manual whatsoever when it comes to the use of, or operation of the AEB.
I'm at a loss of the stupidity over this. Is there any way, software wise or anything to allow them to work independently of each other as they should?

My AEB break has deployed twice - once when a car suddenly slammed on the breaks in front of me after narrowly hitting a semi, and the second time when a car swerved in front of me. I have my warning set to early so I can react on my own, but in both instances it happened so fast I was grateful the car stopped by itself. It’s a very aggressive break, you can feel almost a “click” of the break pedal lurching forward and you definitely stop on a dime. Trust me, you’ll know if it deploys.
