Who has window tints in NY? And how dark are they?

So effective on January 2017 a couple of geniuses in Albany decided it would be a good idea to involve window tints with our annual vehicle inspection. Although I think it's a great idea so our police officers can see the people they pull over more often, I think it's a terrible idea that if your windows are too dark then you will fail inspection.

With that being said, there's a possibility that my Sonata will fail its inspection in July due to the windows, which are 35%. Not exactly sure how much light passes through the windows but hopefully it won't give me any issues.

Does anyone in NY have tinted windows? If so, how dark are they percentage wise?

EDIT: I really don't want to take these tints off. It makes the car look great!

I'm not sure how NY does it, but in Texas when you take your vehicle to get inspected they have to inspect it "as is", meaning they can't change anything about the vehicle. I had a Old truck with 5% tints on all windows. Definitely illegal, but I rolled the windows down before I got the inspection place. By law they can't roll up the windows and check. I didn't that every year the whole time I owned that truck. Never had any issues. So that could be a possibility for you.
Just trying to help.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) today released a new video designed to educate consumers on New York State’s new window tinting law, which went into effect on January 1, 2017 and requires window tint testing during annual motor vehicle inspections. While testing during the vehicle inspection is new, the tinting standards are not. Since 1992, New York State law has required that all windshield and front side windows allow at least 70 percent of outside light to pass through. The new law is designed to better protect law enforcement by keeping vehicles with excessive tinting off the road.

if yours are darker they may fail you. unless you find a shop that will close their eyes on it. i suspect it will take some time for shops to get tint measuring state approved equipment, most likely they will go by eye, for now, comparing known tints to yours.

Too many nucken-futz with guns now. Cop pulls you over for a blown taillamp and doesn't know you just held up the 7-11 and he gets blown away. Happened in Mass 30 years ago and is part of the basis for the tint restrictions here.

Box up all the crazies and we have it made...

when you get pulled over lower all windows, turn on the light inside, it will make a big difference. seeing how you make their job a bit easier, they may not even care about the tint. or may let you go with a warning.

In NYC pretty much any tint is a no no. A buddy of mine got pulled over & the cops made him scrape half the tint off right there!! They don't play.
