I would like to find a non-suction cup mounting solution that allows my phone to be plugged in to the USB and sit upright. It seems the only mount I can find that would accommodate this is one of the magnetic air vent mounts, but then my phone is blocking the heat or AC and there's a giant neodymium magnet trying to suck microchips out of the back of my phone. Not best case scenario.
If you have a phone mount that you like let me know. Thanks!
I use a weighted friction (bean bag) car mount that sits on the dash (no suctions). Mine is super old, so it may slide on my dash a little when I make quick/sharp turns. But, the newer models may stick better to the dash.
We use (when we ever use them which is basically never) yet, still we do own two Air Frames made by Kenu. It is 4 Star rated on Amazon, by about 2,500 people. They work fine, no magnet, however they do use the vent.
Now what we do 99.9 percent of the time is just keep it in the little cubby all closed up. I don't really need to see my phone as I can do all the actions on screen.
Not sure what kind of phone you have, but I use an iPhone dock by Belkin and have been pretty happy with it. Works great as a place to dock your phone while using CarPlay (or Android Auto). The base is too deep for the cubby, but if I tilt it slightly it fits fine. And it actually works better with the tilt because it gives a better view of the phone.
The dock stays in place far better than I expected, so I haven't found a need to secure it in the cubby at all. And I haven't had any issues with the phone bouncing around or coming detached from the dock. I'm not an aggressive driver, though, so take that for what it's worth. Because the dock isn't secured, you do have to push down on the dock while pulling the phone out to keep the dock in place. That can be done one-handed but still might be an annoyance to some.
And because the phone is tilted back at an angle while in the dock, the cubby wall itself provides support for it. So the phone stays pretty stable even when you need to tap or 3D touch the screen.
The only issue this solution could have is that the cord ends up being bent pretty aggressive since it comes out of the back of the dock. I'm not sure how long the cable will hold up before it's damaged and the CarPlay connection becomes unreliable. I've been scouring eBay lately looking for a dock that might work better but haven't found anything yet.
i had THIS on my elantra gt and worked pretty good. I liked it for its sturdiness and easy to mount and unmount. Also the minimalistic design looked clean. Only bad thing about this was that the phone would rub against a portion of the dash and scratch the paint. Now i just don't use any kind of mount.
I did this in my LF loaner car and I do this with my current YF. It eliminates the need for a suction cup mount/the need to lean over to use the phone as well as the need to look down at your center dash and since its right in front of you, you're never taking your eyes off the road. I can also flip it up and it's out of the way when not in use or when you need more visibility.
