Front stabilizer failure

Noticed a rattling sound from the front end of the car when hitting certain types of bumps/rough road. Turns out my right front stabilizer bar needs replacing. Dealer has ordered part, and it's covered under warranty, thankfully. However, I thought stabilizer bars were supposed to be replaced in pairs. Do I need to ask them to replace both the front right and left, or is just replacing the right ok?

EDIT: typo

That seems really odd on such a new car. How many miles?

There is no right or left stabilizer bar. Only front and rear. There are however, right and left stabilizer bar links - which connects the stabilizer bar to the suspension at the left and right control arms. So I'm assuming by "right front stabilizer bar", you mean right front stabilizer bar link. Should it break on such a new car ? Probably not, but stranger things have occurred.

I have had 2 different cars have sway bar links break over the years, but both times were after driving on a rough dirt road and bouncing into a low section similar to a deep pothole.

Simply the huge movement of one wheel into the hole and the other side rising up, put so much twist onto the bar, something had to go, so it was the link.

There is tremendous strain on a sway bar link when one wheel is going up and the other side going down.

Actually I am shocked they do not break more often.

On smooth roads and normal cornering not a big deal, but hitting a pot hole while mid corner, can put several hundred pounds MORE of force onto the bar and links.

It happens!!

Sounds like the rubber around the mounting point gave out or came off or apart, probably not the link itself broken but just the isolating rubber.

That happens fairly easily, but did you hit some huge bump before or anything out of the ordinary?
Kinda odd on such a new car.

When cars get older the rubber gets hard or cracks and can pull loose a lot easier. Creating the dreaded clunk sound when one wheel hits a bump or moves up and down.

No specific major bump that I can think of. But yes, probably to rubber is gone. I didn't get to see it at the dealership, but their report says there is "play" in the right front stabilizer link. If the link bar broke completely I think I'd hear a lot more noise and feel much more difference in handling.

They're replacing the link this coming Friday. I'll ask for the old part back, but they might not give it to me since it's a warranty repair.
