1,500 miles and already had first issue this morning - flat tire warning, but tire ok

I was about 4 miles into my drive heading to work this morning and all of a sudden a yellow triangle and low tire icon illuminated on my instrument cluster and the message center was flashing showing that I had 0 PSI of air in my left rear tire, basically saying it was completely flat! The car felt fine, so I kept going, then about a minute later they all went off and then it said I had 34 PSI of air in that tire. I drove on 30 miles to work and got out and the tire looked perfectly fine. What is going on? A co-worker said maybe the sensor got wet last night as it did rain heavily all night, but I don't see how this could happen. I never had the light come on in error when I had my '12 Honda Civic. I am sure this is something I should mention when I take my car in for the low RPM vibration on acceleration, rough ride from rear suspension... I will just keep adding to the list. Thanks for any info.

A high energy radio signal in close proximity to you car can disrupt the TPMS for a short period of time but it is generally transient and resolves itself after a period of time. It could be something as simple as passing a trucker who was using a high power SSB radio or something similar. If it happens repeatedly it should be cause for concern.

Thanks for the info. I had never heard of that before, but good to know. I never had it happen on my Civic the two years I owned it, so I didn't know anything like this could happen and I drove on the freeway a lot and took the same roads I take now in the Sonata. I was on a residential road in the city limits going 30 mph when the alarm came on and I didn't see any trucks nearby, nor any radio stations.

It was really alarming this morning with all of those lights flashing then it saying my tire had ZERO air in it. Had I had a co-worker or friend in the car, it would have been pretty embarrassing to have a brand new car giving a false warning. I do know that my rear suspension has became overly harsh, it may have jarred something loose. At any rate I am not very happy right now... hopefully as mentioned it was just a lost signal that was temporary and will not happen again, but I am definitely going to mention it to the dealer. It is a little too soon to already have an issue. I owned my Honda Civic for 2 years and never had a single issue.

Thanks.

Thanks. Well I am not checking anything... only 1600 miles, less than 3 months old, they can check it. I will add it to my list for three other things I have already made an appointment to have checked... engine vibration, transmission shifting too quickly/low power and the ride that has got more firm and harsh as time/miles go by. I paid too much for this car to be unhappy. I bought a new car to not have problems for awhile... had I wanted to keep having issues I would have kept my 1993 Mercedes-Benz with 400,000 miles. Rant over. lol.

Yeah, that is what mine was... it was flashing the triangle, low tire icon and a warning in the message center and was flashing "0 PSI" on the left rear tire and it was ringing a bell. I didn't feel any flat tire, so I went on and it finally went off after a minute or so and then read it had 35 PSI. It hasn't came back on.

I take it to the dealer on Thursday for engine vibrations and to have the shocks/struts checked. I am going to mention this as well. I know that the car is under warranty, but this is insane. I have purchased 20 year old cars before with 200,000 miles that I have been happier with... a brand new car should not have issues imo, that is why you buy new. I never had problems with my new Honda other than it being too small for me and uncomfortable.

Hopefully you get your issue resolved. I will post what the dealer says when I get it in there.

Ok, so I dropped the car off this morning and by the time I got to work, the dealership called me.

They are saying this is not the dangerous tire pressure alert. It's because my oil change interval was set by time, and I'm 8 days overdue.

Of course, I responded then why does the tire pressure come up on the information screen? They said it was just the first diagnostic and I could page through the choices to see the others.

I'm not sure I'm buying any of this, but we'll see.

With all due respect the issues you mention are not earth shattering, some, I believe cannot be resolved, and those that can really are minor and every brand has issues regardless of how many miles or age. You will have to die if you want to see true perfection in an automoble, it does not exist in real life. Surprised the test drive did not reveal the engine vibration or stiff ride. Perhaps test drive another one on the lot just for comparison to see if yours is unique.

That is true. Some people may care less about things that bother me. lol. I feel if they cannot be resolved they either need to refund my money or give me another car, if another one does not do it and they cannot get mine to perform like it should. The "test drive" was fine, the car did not have the engine vibrations at low RPM acceleration, it has only got worse as time went on (and I have babied the car), as has the ride quality. The car seemed smooth at first, but now feels like it has the turbo suspension.

I may need to drive another or two for comparison. I take the car in tomorrow. She said I may need to ride with the tech to help make diagnosis. I will report back the results.

It is true all cars have issues, but I didn't expect it so quick for a new car. I bought a new car to not have problems - I may be better off with an old one with a few quirks that can be expected. I feel that have a $24K (that you paid $19.5k for), you should already be unhappy and have to take to the dealer. I have driven old cars for years and I have had tons of different cars, all makes, models, etc and while many had their issues due to age and miles, that was just because of age/miles. My 2012 Honda was new and I never had an issue with it, nor ever seen any differences with other cars like it. I only sold it because it was too small for me. I mean this noise and vibration is insane for a brand new car, I have never owned another car that behaves like that, even ones I have had with over 200k miles, so on a 2 month old car with 1800 miles, it is unacceptable. Also when going up a steep hill from a low speed (as if I have turned and it is still in 2nd gear), it will go so slow, even with the pedal 1/2 way down... I press it more and it is like it jumps down 2 gears and jolts you then takes off. Very annoying and I do not think something that is normal. Does yours do this?

Thus far my complaints - engine vibration at low RPM acceleration, transmission shifts too quickly in all but sport mode and loses power, then there is the ride issue and the false alarm I have received for a flat tire that was not flat at all. I may have no other problems and I hope I don't especially if I decide to keep the car. I bought the car because I love the looks and the features and even the quality... just a few quirky things that I think are an issue with my particular car. I know that no other owner of these cars want to hear about problems in fear their car may be next or it makes their car sound bad, but it is probably just my car and I am sure even mine is a good car... other than the annoying things I mentioned, I love my car... dings on the top and hood and all, which I hope to get repaired soon.

Thanks.

Well, so far so good. I have removed the service interval warning and the warning light was gone and has remained that way so far.

So basically, tire pressure appearing on your telematics screen does not mean that the yellow warning triangle is automatically about your pressure.

Glad you got some good news... hopefully they got it all sorted out for you! Thanks for the update.

That's OK. Long as it is in the middle.

I keep mine full. This is how you add coolant to "modern" cars

Not like the goodle days when you burned your hand and sent coolant spraying into the air trying to add it to the radiator :D

Thanks SGR, I didn't even bother asking. The car runs in the normal temperature range, it was just the coolant in the overflow pan.

**Well the car went into the shop today for the first time. What a waste of my time. #1 , the service advisor told me what someone else already did here, that the thing runs off of a signal and something may have set it off. Well I told her I didn't know because my other car I had for 2 years never set it off and I drive the same roads daily.

As far as the vibration, the service tech took it for a drive on his own even after she had told me I would be riding along. Anyway he comes back 20 minutes later after probably "hot-rodding" my car and she comes out with him and naturally they say no problems found. That vibration is normal... it will do that until I get the transmission to call for a lower gear. What a bunch of wash. It didn't do it the first 500 miles when I had it. I didn't think to ask them why it started after 500 miles, I was so frustrated I guess.

*They also said the ride was fine, it was normal, just alike all of the other Sonatas. After that, I didn't care to hear anymore, I should have known it was a waste of time.

They did give me the good news that I had a nail / screw in my right rear tire, on the edge of the sidewall/bottom of tire that they said could not be plugged due to the location, so they conveniently got me a price of a new KUMHO tire for $125.00 + tax and labor. More good news after another. (I actually priced one of the crappy tires at Sears for $104.00 (mounting/balance included) + tax.

I later took the car to have the tree nut damage checked... it was $825.00 in damage and the hood has to come off, hood pad, headliner and trunk liner. Insurance will pay it all, but it will go on Carfax record. I am trying to decide on whether to just leave it like it is. I am not keen on the idea of having my new interior ripped out. Ugh, I wish I had not have bought this car, what terrible luck. Oh well. :|
