Nice weather is around the corner!

Got my Sonata cleaned up over the weekend and took a couple pictures of me and my wife's cars. My front grill is plasti dipped before anyone asks....

I like it...

Greetings. Very nice looking pair of cars you've got there. So I look deep into the past and in the garage is that an older Accent or Elantra back there? :nerd:

Haha nope, it is my 2001 Honda Civic LX. I drive it everyday to work because it is a 100 mile round trip and I do not want to put that many miles on my new Sonata

I like the look of your plastidipped grille and am considering doing the same. I have acouple of questions for you:
  • It appears to be black plastidip. Do you know if there is a dark grey available to match the other trim?
  • Any plans on plastidipping any of the other trim pieces?

The do have different colors... go to their website. How does it appear to be plasti dipped? I have been asked by numerous people where I ordered my black grill from, so your statement is a surprising one.

I am going to plasti dip the grey trim piece on the lower bumper as well, so it matches the grill.

I had a Silverado 1500 for 3 years and I plasti dipped the emblems when I first bought it. When I went to trade it in 3 years later, the emblems looked the exact same as when I first dipped them. I also live in North Eastern Ohio with bad winters.

Was looking to do the same but After seeing how it looks I've changed my mind
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion however, posting ignorant comments like this is not the best way to get your post count up... unless it is something constructive, its best not to say it all.

Sorry. Poorly worded comment on my part.

When I said it appears to be black plastidip, I meant the color appears to be black (not a dark grey), not that it appears to be pastidipped. To the contrary, it looks very good and smooth enough that I would not have guessed it was plastidipped if you hadn't said so.
Oh, no worries. Thanks! I think it turned out great and I can not wait to get the grey trim piece done next.

I like the grille blacked out. I was checking out the grille on carid that is black and badgeless. Very clean look to it. I was thinking about dipping the chrome trim around the window frames. Not a huge fan of all the chrome.

Black vinyl...

I do love the new blue for 2015. The grill looks nice and I really like how it takes the attention away from the adaptive cruise control sensor… the big rectangle just below the crooked H

So I started the plastidip on my car yesterday. There's a couple of sections that need re-done, though they don't really show up in the photos. Where the trim abuts painted metal, there is a decent separation between the materials and the plastidip strips nice and neatly in a straight line. But where the trim abuts rubber or plastic, it is pretty much flush with those materials and it's a bugger to get the plastidip to peel along that seam. As a result, I masked right along the edge of the chrome trim that was to be sprayed with the plastidip - an imperfect solution at best.

As such, it was pretty time consuming. Below is a picture of the passenger side window trim all done and a photo of the drivers side quarter window that shows the contrast to the chrome trim on the remainder of that side.

Overall, I'm happy with the look. Obviously not the choice of many people (most prefer the chrome) but I really like how well it coordinates with the grey beneath the bumper as well as with both my summer and winter rims.

I still plan on doing the chrome sills (which I have never liked) and the front grille. The grille should be very interesting, as I plan to plastidip only the chrome portion of the grille and leave the glossy black plastic as is. I think the grey/gloss black combo should look really good together.

I want to warn you before you embark on that journey. This was originally my plan as well. With plasti dip, if you are using it with a masking method, as you would with only painting the chrome in the grille, you have to peel the masking tape while it is still wet. You will see in my picture below that I originally tried to do it this way. First of all, it takes FOREVER to mask it all off perfectly. Secondly, since there is so much masking to be done, it is very difficult to remove the masking before the pasti dip starts to adhere to it. After three or four attempts, I am a bit of a perfectionist so I do not settle for half a**ed work, I removed all of the masking from the grille, except the adaptive cruise control, and pasti dipped everything.

This is just my 2 cents, so take it for what its worth to you. I just figured I would save you the headache and the extra 12 beers you'll need for the frustration.

From what I have seen on the plasti dip website, it is advised that if (in this case) chrome touches the gasket you need to peel the masking tape on the final coat before it dries to get a clean line edge. The gapped edges you spray over the edge to the masking line to get the clean edge. There is a video on YouTube explaining masking techniques. It makes sense if you watch it. I want to blackout the chrome window trim and lower trim under the door.

and before anyone asks, yes I did plasti dip the masked off triangular section beneath both headlights. I saw a picture of someone that had vinyl on theirs and I thought I liked the look. After the plasti dip dried, I did not receive positive feedback on how it looked, so I removed it.

dontbelieve & jgr444, thanks for the tip on the stripping while the dip is still wet. That masked up grille is pretty much exactly what I had envisioned that I would have to do, presuming that the ridge between the chrome & the black wasn't sufficient for the plastidip to tear along that line. At least I go into this next step forewarned. Good thing it's a long weekend coming up....

If you guys ever have questions.. feel free to message me. I run my own shop on weekends for now until I start picking up more business. here are some examples of my work!

I'll be Liquid Wrapping my Sonata as well as de-badging it soon. I likely won't remove the crooked H as I dont feel like welding and doing bondo work to fill the pin holes like i had on my Mini cooper S.

I'm thinking I might try to vinyl wrap my window trim first. I have seen some great videos, and the quality of vinyl versus plasti-dip is close but I wouldn't have to spend the time masking things off. I just need to find a place to buy some and get a few minutes to do it. Also does anyone know if the chrome trim along the bottom of the door frame comes off. I would just like to take it off instead of vinyl wrapping it.

Finally got around to doing some plastidip work this weekend. did the back emblems and the chrome on the front grille.. Ignore the smears, i didn't get a chance to wash it before I took the pictures... I kind of like the 2-tone look on the front grill. Thoughts and comments are always welcome.

I plan on getting the badge-less grille down the road, have to wait until after I get the money to get my daughter's graduation present.

I like how it turned out. I personally don't care for chrome grilles. I haven't had a chance to plasti dip the chrome trim around the windows. I see dipping around the area where the mirror is being problematic. How did you deal with it?

#37 ·
I did the chrome accent strips on the rocker panels this weekend. Couldn't find a way to take them off, so ended up masking them off. Took a long time, but they turned out well. I'll be curious to see how well they hold up, though. Might just be too much contact (rocks and feet) for the plastidip to perform well.

I also re-did the chrome trim around the windows on one side, but didn't take any photos. And, yes, it was a pain masking around the mirror. This time, I wet stripped the trim, but I'm still not 100% satisfied with the results.

I checked with the body shop for Hyundai and was told the chrome doesn't come off the lower rocker panels. You can get the base model Sonata rockers but that's the only option. I was wondering how well it would hold up to tint, vinyl, or plasti dip. Looks good though. I'm thinking it might be easier if I removed the mirrors when I do the dipping but I'm still undecided if I'm going to use vinyl or plasti-dip.

i tried masking the car like you usually do for paint and it never came out how I wanted it.. the edges were all screwed up and it was a giant pain in the ass to do since the rubberized plastidip doesn't edge-peel like normal paint does.. so i looked around and found this video from the Dip Your Car guys.. i tried it and it was simple and came out pretty much perfect.. the only thing I would say is that, unless you're doing the spraying in a vaccuum with no wind, you WILL need to cover a lot more of the car than they do, otherwise you'll end up using goo-gone on half your car to get rid of the overspray.. but their tactic of leaving a few inches of area around the part your trying to dip is right on.. just make sure that you do enough coats to make the extra paint around the edges thick enough to not just rip when you grab it and pull.. and the key to getting a real clean edge when you pull it is the angle.. i would also suggest using a toothpick or bamboo skewer to get the extra paint from inside the letters as opposed to a screwedriver like they recommend..

heres the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8Gfd46AxLw

TL;DR: watch the video and use their method.. mask/cover more area than they tell you to.. make sure you do enough coats for it to be thick enough not to rip in the wrong places.. check your angles when peeling.. use a toothpick for getting extra dip out of small areas.

enjoy and hopefully this helps you guys as much as it helped me!

also, don't peel the tape when the plastidip is wet.. wait about 10 minutes between coats, then another 15-20 after the final coat before you start peeling/tearing the extra off.

#42 ·
You most certainly need to peel the tape at a 45 degree angle away when it's still nice and wet to get sharp lines... also if you take it to an actual authorized installer and have it done.. the results will be better and last longer. unless you want to buy an entire gallon of the new formula that isn't in aerosol form. It will last fine... but if you have a shop do it, it may cost $50-100 but it will be vinyl smooth and higher quality.

#46 ·
Trust me... I don't need to watch the video... as I've been doing liquid wrap for 2 years from emblems to show cars to motorcycles and 4 wheelers. If your putting the correct amount of material there is 0 reason to leave the tape in any situation. If your not doing 4-6 coats.. the first 2 of which are 50% transparent then 4 thick but not runny coats... your not doing it correctly in the first place. The dip will be thick enough around the outside of your emblems that it simply peels up with a simple finger rub at the edge of the dip.... then you just peel it away.

I just started on my grille. Hope it turns out as nice as yours.

#48 ·
Well I just finished up plasti dipping my grille and rear emblem and here's the outcome.
