KK heres whats happening. One morning I start the car and the engine light starts flashing and the engine was shaking kinda violently. The day before and the night before it ran perfect no sign of anything going wrong. Then I start it that morning and its only like that when the engine is first started cold. If I turn it off and start it once or twice more the shaking will go away and the engine will idle nicely again but the engine light is still on. If I drive it all day its fine and start it warm it starts fine and no problems but the light is always on. I just wanted to know if anyone has had this same problem. The car is a 2001 Accent GSi with the 1.6 DOHC engine. Thanks

Someone told me if the CEL (check engine light) FLASHES, stop the car and get it towed to the shop. It's a serious problem.

I don't know if this is true.

There will be fault-codes stored in your ECU.......have them read (only) at a main Hyundai Dealership.

As a general note, use only pure synthetic 5W/40 oil & NEVER let the level fall below MAX on the dipstick!....check frequently.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Usually found at the intake manifold gasket (on this car). You can often see part of the gasket "sucked-in" or missing. You can usually find it if you look very closely around where the manifold mounts to the head. The engine light will flash indicating a misfire due to servere lean condition caused by the massive vacuum leak. The vacuum leak will often subside after engine warmup due to expansion of metal parts. You can usually hear the leak in the form of loud hissing at the source location. Another area to look for a vacuum leak is the PCV valve tube being cracked.

When the check engine light flashes, it means that there is a misfire condition that will "cook" the catalytic converter if vehicle continues to be driven in a constant misfire situation.

2000 Elantra 1.6 GLS 134,000 KM. I am currently experiencing the same symptoms. In addition to the (cold start) rough idle, I have noticed some black smoke. Both of these issues practically disappear after the car has warmed up. I Had a diagnostic check done on my car last week but no fault codes were obtained. I plan on replacing the intake manifold gaskets this week-end. however I have been told about a number of other possible bad actors, Namely: 1.) Fuel Injectors 2.) Oxygen sensor 3.)Distributor
What other checks should i make when i take my car back to the mechanic this week-end? i would like to get the problem rectified because i am going to be very busy at work for the next few months.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

you are correct about the codes, but...you can have them read at just about every parts store around. & i didn't know about the syntetic oil.

There's never enough time to do it right, but there's always enough time to do it over.
