Trans issue

Hello. I have a 2005 accent GLS hatchback with the 1.6L. Having some issues with the tranny and can not figure it out. First, there is trans fluid puddles on top of the trans in the casting cavities. Looks like its coming from underneath the drivers side motor mount. Thought maybe a sensor but there's not one there that I could see. Checked the vent and its dry. I clean it up with shop towrls and it's back just taking the car out once or twice! So, I don't know where it's coming from. The other issue is while driving the car goes through the gears fine until around 50-60 mph overdrive is very hesitant to kick in. Takes about 5-10 minutes of driving for it to shift and fluid level is good i think. Just changed it and only put in 4 quarts and it's slightly overfilled on the stick. Any ideas?

Normally a drain (not a full flush) only uses <=3 qts. May be getting cavitation/churning/foaming due to extra qt (extra 15-20%) and pressure is pushing up out trans range switch o-ring and/or the shaft speed sensor o-ring. The TR switch is hard to see without removing the air box/ducting. Also, did you use Hyundai's AT oil? Also, oil may be taking longer than usual to come to operating temp due to excess. Oil pan will likely leak as well being overfilled.

Yeah, the first time i drained it i got about 7 quarts out of it. The trans pan is leaking after the second gasket attempt. I've heard that some Hyundai techs don't even use a gasket, just the right stuff gasket maker. May give that a shot. Also currently I'm using castrol transmax multi import fluid. Would that cause the issues im having or is this thing on the way out? Has 136,000 on it.

Castrol Transmax Multi-Import is fine and works. That should not be a problem, especially if a full flush was done.

On the pan leak:

do you park on any inclines?

the excess level will come out there (as least).

and if you over-torque(d) the pan bolts (easy to do if not on inch-lbs spec), the leak will occur there and/or in between those.

and/or if the oil pan lip is bent, it will leak from there.

Recommendations on leaking:

remove/drain the excess fluid to the full mark (use normal hot test procedure to confirm proper level) +

thoroughly clean away existing oil around pan leak areas until dry ... and then pack Permatex Ultra Grey sealant around those pan leak areas ... and then let it cure ... +

park flat +

clean away oil from top of AT casing cavities +

This should arrest most or all of the leak areas, without having to do a pan drop and re-fill. If not, then you can address pan out-of-alignment, then, if needed.

On the OD delayed shift: does this tend to happen before (full AT operating temp) warm-up (full hot-up)?

The trans pan is brand new dorman brand. I tried to find torque specs online but got like 3 different ones. Right now the pan bolts are torqued to 75 inch pounds which seems awfully tight to me but the other specs i found were 84 and 118 inch pounds. Left it at 75 cause i did not want to split gasket or deform the new pan. The overdrive issue is basically every time i drive it. Some days it's worsr than others. Cold or hot. Thought about trying the sea foam for transmissions but im a little hesitant. Feels like something's sticking but, im not sure. Park the car basically flat all the time.

When I remove oil pans and have new ones, I lay them on a flat surface upside down first to check for out-of-flush. Did you by chance do that with the new Dorman? Do you have your old one you can check to see where it stood on that? I have nothing for sea foam for trannies. (Personally, I wouldn't try it.) It is not unusual for Hyundai ATs to need babying during warm-up/hot-up entering OD. Pressures need to build, temps-need to reach optimal flow. Usually, once at operating temp, they shift fine. Ease the car till then, especially if its just a few minutes.

Just curious, temp-wise, where is the car driven?

And, on the 136k mileage, what have been all the previous flush mileages? And, were the filters changed each flush/drain? Was Hyundai SP or Castrol Multi-import used each occasion?

I didn't do that with the new pan. Old one was trashed. I bought the car in Maine. The dealer i bought it from was a little shady. He changed the fluid for me and it was blacker than black! Whoever had this car before me didn't take care of it. Had 83,090 on it when i bought it so, i don't know. Ever since i had it i changed the fluid and pan drop about 6 times with filter.Tried to baby it on the way home today and just did not want to cooperate.Doing some work on it this weekend so, we'll see how it goes. Thanks for all the advice. Will post back afterwards.

I love Maine. Great state. I-95 all to one's self - or mostly ... at least it felt that way each time I was up there. First week in Oct. once, - temps. Respect. Hiked to top of Camden State Park then. That's living life.

Sounds like you've been on top of tranny.

It IS worth checking for codes, though, given the OD/end clutch symptoms.

Blacker than black (at 83k) ... original (old) filter likely then too ... worn discs and plates ?? ... worn OD/end clutch discs and plates?
