Oil head non-return valve

On my old 1960s humber the engine has a ball valve in the side of the engine that blocks off the oil line when the engine shuts down. The purpose being is that it stops the oil draining out of the engine circuit completely when the car is standing for a while.
I have not used the Accent so much recently and on cold starts it sounds pretty ill - as if there is no oil circulating for the first couple of turns before it fires. After that its perfectly fine. I just wondered if anyone knows if there is a non-return valve in the oil circuit in the Accent engine - or what the symptoms would be if if there is one and its not working properly/at all. Its got plenty of oil and is running well, just a little concerned that as it gets colder its gonna get worse and might cause real damage...
