'04 Engine rattling/Clicking/Noise at low rpm

Hello,

Recently, my 04 accent (97,000 miles on engine and auto trans) has started to develop a rattling or Clanking noise coming from the engine at low RPM's. I flushed the engine and changed the oil and oil filter, thinking it could be due to oil clogging the HLA, But this was a no go. The engine is still making the noise, and I think it is starting to get worse.

The noise only happens when the car is idling at low RPM's. As soon as I rev the engine past 1000-1500 RPM's, the noise stops. The noise is worse when idling in gear, either reverse or drive, however as soon as you accelerate past 1000-1500 RPM, the noise goes away, until you decelerate to low RPM again. I'll try to take a video of it and post a link to it on here tomorrow. Any advice would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Could be a lot of things. If you can get a hold of an engine stethoscope it would help.

Even listening to the end of a long screwdriver although crude often can help isolate issue by placing end against water pump housing and various other components.
Is it still the original pump still , look for glycol drips from the pump weep hole if you can see it.
Even running car for 60 seconds without accessory belts can also help narrow down
problem. Something like the idler tension bearings on A/C belt is another possibility.
Remember free advice is worth everything you pay for it.

Hyundai vehicles require a Hyundai oil filter, the same problem happened with my accent. An this is because there's a special valve in the oil filter itself that keeps the oil in your camshafts where as in a regular oil filter your oil is stuck in the filter and not lubricating your cams, HLA, etc.
Napa also sells this oil filter.

That's about the best video I could get with the camera I own. Hopefully it can at least help a little. As far as I can tell, the sound appears to be coming from the left side of the engine. It almost sounds like it is coming from the power steering pump, but I can't be positive. Anyone else experience this sound and know what it is?

Hold the engine speed to maybe 2500 - 3000,, you'll likely verify the problem being a rod knock (spun rod bearing) when the rod exits the block.. missed a few oil changes,, did we ??

At least you audio is extremely real sounding..

You do know you have a cracked/leaking front exhaust pipe... right ?? MIL illuminated ?

Greaaatttttt. I've only owned the car for about 5 months, and I changed the oil the day I bought it and every 3-4 thousand miles after; but who knows what the previous owners habits were haha.

Honestly, I don't know much about cars, so what should I listen for to tell if I do indeed have a rod knock? anything specific?

And yea, I know about the exhaust leak. I'm trying to fix one thing at a time when I get the money, haha. I'm but a poor college kid trying to get from A to B.

Nothing to listen for, you already have the knocking rod,, that is what that loud sharp loose knocking sound is when you flip the throttle..

And yea, I know about the exhaust leak.
Funny I could hear it along with the knocking in the audio

You going to be poorer, fastest easy thing to do is replace the engine.. keep running the engine, and it will stop when the rod breaks and maybe leave nice hole in the iron block... had 1 towed in recently, said it stalled, wont start.. went out, hit starter,,, CLUNK... tried to turn crank forward, NO GO,, did roll back with parts clanking sound inside,, hit key again,, it fired and knocked for maybe 5 seconds when rod and misc left confines of block and fell on ground under the car.. did not even have to push that one anywhere
Save your money, going to need it for transportation now

Haha. I'm now looking into a local dealerships $2000 minimum trade in value on any car. Thanks for the info concerning the car. It might have been for the better before I sunk any more money into the car, haha.
