Can you change your outer cv joints without replacing the wheelbearings and do you have a step by step procedure for DIY.

Yes, you can, and is normally quite easy. For this, you must remove the complete shaft, which just pulls out of the tranny (do not pry, just hand-turn the shaft and pull-push-pull till it slips out). The section, which fits into the tranny, has a C clip and must be replaced every time you pull out the shaft.
The stub axle is some times seized in the hub, and has to be pressed out.

one thing to add to dukes post, the hub nut that retains the shaft is done up very tight and you will need a large socket and long swing bar (preferably 3/4 drive) to loosen it
