I did a search, but don't see this anywhere.

My car is currently in the shop having a cv axle shaft replaced. I thought this problem was related, but the shop says there is nothing wrong.

I noticed that the steering wheel has to turn quite a bit further than it used to. It is especially noticable when making a 90 degree turn. I don't recall ever having to turn the wheel so that is it upside down to do that! This car has 121K+ on her.

I have a friend who is a master mechanic and he says this sounds like the "rag joint" or universal joint in the steering. He also says that he can't recall any Hyundai ever having this problem, and he has worked on a lot of cars.

So, anyone know? Ever had to replace this thing, and how much did it cost? I can't imagine it was cheap.

As long as you don't have any free play in the wheel, I prolly wouldn't worry about it. If it does need replaced it's not hard, it shouldn't take more than a half hour.

This sounds like your steering rack has been replaced before and it wasn't centered. How many turns to the right and how many to the left.
