Hi there everyone
I am the new and proud owner of a 1.2 Comfort i20 in Diamond Black with the red trim interior. This is my and my partner's first brand new car and we both absolutely love it. In spite of most of the reviews I'd read of the i20 beforehand (which were pretty uniformly negative towards it's interior - cheap plastics, dull place to be, blah, blah, whine) I love the inside of the car. The one thing which is less than great is the gear knob, although I don't mind it as much now we've got the car as when we were viewing cars in the dealership. I'm still potentially interested in upgrading it though. Hyundai's UK website suggests that the gear knob upgrade is only for Classic models, which seems bizarre seeing as it's the same gear knob as in the Comfort.
Any advice on this and/or other gear knobs (bit of chrome and leather would be nice) which are suitable for the i20 would be gratefully received.
Thanks and happy motoring...
Long live the i20!

You can easily remove the knob by turning it counterclockwise or clockwise, one of those 2. So I think you can easily get another one, i.e. a leather one or something.

QUOTE (gedgar @ Oct 25 2009, 07:41 PM) Any advice on this and/or other gear knobs (bit of chrome and leather would be nice) which are suitable for the i20 would be gratefully received. It's very easy to screw off the original gearknob. On day 1 (I got my I20 back in march) I ordered a replacement knob on eBay. My I20 is silver (as is the radio), so i ordered a silver knob with blue led's in it (IMG: style_emoticons/default/innocent.gif)

I’m not to sure if it’s that simple on the 2010 model I20. As you have a “Lift and Shift” the gear knob. (Lift and shift to hit reverse).
I tired un-screwing mine but it wouldn’t budge.
If anyone’s replaced this type of knob please let me know how it’s done.
Cheers
JC

QUOTE (KDC @ Oct 28 2009, 05:04 AM) they have changed it to 'lift' gear stick? Oops, i didn't know about that either. (i hate those) According to eBay auctions one generally needs a different kind of knob for 'lift' geaar sticks.

Same here, 2010 model and its back and to the far right for reverse, no lifting! Can twist the knob to get it off though.

the test car (black crdi style) didn't have the lift option, but mine (now i've finally got it) does. though i'm not too fussed about the gear knob (didn't like the style's one) and it's better than the one my metro had (IMG: style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Looks like it could be the diesel model then.

Just had a look in both handbooks i've got (managed to get a March and a July version, heh) and there's two types stated.
Type a is without a lift for reverse
1 3 5 |-|-| 2 4 R
Type b is with a lift for reverse
R 1 3 5 |-|-|--| 2 4 (6)
It doesn't state what models they come on.

Would seem that way. I've not been able to find anything else about what gearboxes go in which model so could do with confirmation from JC what engine he has as does seem to look like the 1.2 petrol has the non-lift version (guessing might be different design due to the torque output of the engines being different??).

Should have mentioned on my original post. My I20 is petrol 1.4. Maybe that’s why there’s a different gear shift?

could be that all 1.4 variants have it now but could do with some other 1.4 petrol or diesel owners (though most people seem to have gone with a 1.2 it seems).
