Can anyone (or hopefully many) give me some information that is positive with respect to the Sonata suspension issue - namely the 'thunk .. thunkaty clunk ..' issue tha I HAVE!!! and many others appear to have.
I have had my 2010 Sonata GL 5 speed manual (the basic one) with a current 1800 Km's on the clock, for about a month now and from day 3 or 4, I suppose, the noise appeared- seemingly coming from the right rear suspension area - (but is now coming from both sides rear - mostly P/S and to a lesser degree the front also - more on the P/S) The car takes upward projections from the road surface well, with a reasuring soft bump type noise (as all new/newer type cars I've been in do..) - but large cracks, manhole covers uneven pavement and potholes - well that is a completely different story - as someone else wrote "..a bit like the struts are bottoming out" - that sounds a bit like the noise I'm hearing and the feeling I'm feeling when this happens.
The demonstrator I tried, from which I 'fell in love' -- with this car - was smooth as could be - a beautiful ride. Hmmm.
Has anyone had ANY luck -although it's clear that luck has nothing to do with it.
This is driving me CRAZY mad.
The car has been back to the dealership, where it was checked out by a "suspension specialist" - RESULT: "No problem found"
Where to next???? Can anyone help, who is further down the line with this issue???
Maybe a group of people, through a lawyer - might have more success...

I am so glad I have not had this issue. My suspension seems pretty quiet to me. The wife just drove it across the country without any issues.

Well I guess your options would include taking it to another dealership (if there are any other in the area) and see if you have better luck there, be a thorn in the side of your original dealership where maybe they might "find" a problem to appease you, or ask if there is someone else who can diagnose the car such as a regional rep. If you go back to the original dealership I would insist on riding with the suspension "specialist" and pointing out the issues you're having.

Honestly, Idon't think Hyundai will ever fix this issue based on the fact that this model is at the end of its life, second it's going to cost them a fortune to replace suspension on all customers car with complains.

I'm fighting with them for two years now promising me they will fix it, no words so far. If no fix is provided then no more Hyundai for me then.

While beside the point (I know) one member here replaced his rear shocks with the newly released KYBs and stated it was much better.

Yes I know I read that post.

The biggest issue with "thump" is the upper mount, were it is badly designed (this is from the dealer and Hyundai area manager). Shocks would help a bit in this case but the great impact will be on road handling, OEM suffers on loosing control of rear on bumpy roads while in a curve. I tell you, not a great experience.

That does sound scary!
Although I don't suffer from that, its just a lil more noisy then I would like.

I've read that K Sport has coil overs that fit the NF Sonata, although they list 05+ which may mean they all have the same type setup/mounts.

The model is Ksport CHY09-KP but they are pricey at $1000 US. They seem to have their own mounts from what I can tell.

This issue we called K-Thunk has caused LOTS of commotion among some (2006 and early 2007) Sonata owners, but ONLY of the V6 Sonatas..... I think this thread is the LONGEST on this forum..... But the bottom line is, Hyundai DID acknowledged it, and found a fix for it, letting dealers replace the suspension under warranty.... As much as I remember, late 2007 and all 2008 V6 owners were NOT complaining.... Apparently Alabama was using the upgraded suspension for those models.

Here you go, happy, long reading:

http://www.hyundai-forums.com/index.php?sh...&hl=K-Thunk

.....If you're more interested in the FIX, read the later posts, especially the ones towards the end of that thread.....

Well,

I'm confused now. My dealer keeps telling me that the "Fix" will not fix anything. On top, he said the repair will not be covered by Hyundai and would be on his arm.

Here we go again...

Thanks for this great info.
