My office mate at work is 4wd enthusiast. He drives a 1989 Jeep Wrangler through mud, water, and almost anything else imaginable. In order to keep water out of the engine while crossing a river, he routed his air intake to come in through the cabin. Is this something we could with our Accents? has anyone done this before?

Uh. Sure, probably. But if you don't put a lift kit on the car and put huge mud bogging tires on it, I'll be mighty unimpressed with the feat.

I think if you were to drive into water high enough for the air intake to be covered in water, you might have other problems....like floating away.

The intake in this car is at a level comparable to most peoples' mid-upper chest in the cabin. As stated before... if you're driving into water that's 3 ft deep in the Accent, you will have much, much larger issues than where it's getting air from LOL

seems like it would be kinda loud in the cabin with a setup like that. what material is your office mate's intake made out of and where does it enter the cabin? also, running the A/C would give you "super CAI", yay. not sure what the real world advantage of this intake would be. i'm all for you trying it though, no reason NOT to. just take pics. Well, the biggest advantage with an in-cabin filter would be that you would virtually eliminate the risk of sucking in water (unless you pour something on the filter on purpose). I think he has it piped in behind his dash control cluster, like behind a vent or something.

The second biggest advantage is that you would get colder air from the cabin than you would from being near an engine.

Noise wise? I have no idea how loud it would be. He has half-doors with no windows on his Jeep so there's plenty of other noise there.

I just thought the idea was neat and wondered if it had any feasibility.

I dont necessarily think its in the cabin its more like through the side panel up like a reverse CAI. rather than going down it goes up till roof height. If your planning to do that might as well get a propeller and some pontoons because other than making it amphibious its a worthless mod

it doesnt seem worth it to me because the cai would have to be pretty long and a few awkward bends to get it to come back into the cabin instead of staying in the engine bay. you could prob. do one of these, it might be easier to make

I wouldn't worry about hydrolocking with the stock setup...  You would have to get water over the top of the grille opening to draw in water via the factory intake ductwork...  If you need to run through that much water, you have more pressing concerns as your interior will be completely flooded. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laughing.gif)

I reckon I need to put a lift kit and some big mudders on mine. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)   There are currently some "stormwater managment opportunities," if you will,  in my neighborhood when we keep having these freak rainstorms that drop 3" of rain in an hour. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/whistling.gif)  My house itself is fine, I just can't get closer than 0.1 mi to it because every way in is flooded with bumper-deep or greater water lol

At any rate, I would suspect the convoluted mess of piping to bring the duct inside would far outweigh any possible benefits. Design a proper ram air setup into the hood instead. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grin.gif)

im not being rude but this is just foolish to even consider. whats the point? ever heard the engine under load with a sri? its LOUD! not to mention the constant hiss of the basic intake functions from our cars are really loud too. theres no hp gain because of all the bends and turns and length of pipe needed. it would take WAAAYYY too much work (removing the entire dash to prperly fit the pipe, installing it, then removing it and welding a patch over the hole when you realize it was a bad idea, reinstalling the dash) im sure there is many many more reasond against this then for it. and things are always feasible, just need work. but this, this is just boredom.
