Tachometer Options

just collected my i10 after the dealer corrected the juddery clutch, which now seems to have gone away. However since collecting the car the tachometer sits at just under the number 1 on the dial when the engine is started, even when i do not have my foot touching the accelerator. Previously the tachometer was at 0 until I applied any gas. I would like someone to tell me if this is totally normal for the tachometer or not, even if just to put my mind at rest!!

I would say that it is more normal for the tachometer to read just below 1000 rpm than to read zero with the engine at idle, zero revs would normally indicate that the engine has stopped.
However I do wonder if they have helped reduce the juddering by increasing the amount of revs, does the idle speed 0f the engine sound faster than it was do you think ?

The tachometer will only show 0 when the engine is off. As soon as the engine is running (revolving), there have to be >0 RPM (revolutions per minute). My i10 displays the following:

0 RPM - Engine off
1100 RPM - Immediately after a cold-start (Idling)
700 RPM - Engine warmed-up after a few minutes (still Idling)

Readings are approximate.

My tachometer readings are the same as exatoz. Anything more than 700 RPM hot idling they must have speeded it up.
Do you know exactly what they did to cure your clutch judder? My car is going to be "looked at" next Tuesday after being left overnight at the dealers for a cold start when it is at it's worst.

My reads 1100 when cold, 700 when hot, but if you put the lights on it will read 900, this is to help with the charging rate and common on some cars, turn the light off and reves go to 700 again.

At least no-one laughed at my lack of car knowledge!! never had a car with a tachometer before.

The tachometer definitely reads higher after they had my car for sorting out the clutch. Sounds like it was to low previously then from the comments. I'll have to see what the idling reading is when the car has warmed up and compare it. sounds like its now the same as everyone else's.

They changed my clutch plate to sort out the problem. They said the clutch was to high and that was causing the judder. (they also reprogrammed my radio which was annoying and didn't put it back to my channels!!). Now running a lot smoother than before, only had very very slight judder with a hill start but otherwise nothing so a lot happier.

The car they gave me while working on mine had a very annoying seat belt squeak so now understand why some not happy, glad mine doesn't!!!

I was told when I purchased my i10 that it was not possable to adjust the tickover as it is preset

I do like the idea of having it change when the lights are on

I think the first car to have the tickover rise when the lights on was the nissan micra about 15 years ago, it was one of the last car to still have points on.
