I am just wondering if anyone has actually been to a "bass/spl competition" and actually had their subs tested. If so what is your stats and what are you running for amps/wires/caps/subs/etc. I am going to buy an SPL meter at radio shack, its $45 so its prob not the most accurate but it will give me a good idea of what im running close to. The only reason i want to know is because its so loud inside the car, but not that loud outside, so if people ask, which they have before, i can tell them how many dbs im pushing (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Most people dont care, but i do so if you arent interested in this thread dont post negative things please. just for comparison :Telephone dial tone-80dB, Sandblasting/Loud Rock Concert-115dB.(Pain begins -125dB).Jet engine at 100'/Gun Blast-140dB. so i am hoping to be at least 100 db (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) wish me luck

Also for your enjoyment... 160 dB is instant perforation of the eardrum.

I don't listen to music above 85 dB the vast majority of the time, since that's the optimal level to listen to music at. Much below that and you begin to lose the high and low frequencies due to the non-linear nature of the ear. Much above that and you begin to have permanent hearing damage (granted @90 dB, you'd have to listen for approximately 6 hours to start to have major hearing damage, but I do drive for really long periods of time when secret shopping, so that would be an issue for me).

Those little meters are good as a toy, but the closer you get to their limit the less accurate they are. Depending which one you bought they usually cap out at 130 or 140 for the more expensive ones.

On a 500 watt system and a bit of work high 130's would be easy to achieve.

With a whole summer of work put into the car I'm floating around the lower 151's.

Don't give up yet John. Some of us don't make it here every day.

I too have an interest in sound comps, but don't know even where to begin with them. I want to stay with the 8" subs (one sub and one amp). Is there a rookie class to start with?

I'd like to buy a Digital Designs sub and a better amp. I have the box already built.

I have seen some SPL meters for sale in the $20 range. Should be good enough to give a close estimate of how loud I could get.

I saw some site that gave the rules for comps, and there was a class that used the stock battery, alternator, one sub and one amp. Maybe the class for me?

its not like you have to compete with anyone, i know a lot of people who spend a lot of money on their systems, its all personal preference

i havent posted much but this one caught my atention. the current set up in my 07 SR is a clarion max385 video deck, still have factory seperates in the front with the factory coaxial in the back. i have them running off a clarion apx2181. and now for the big part, i have 2 kicker 12" L5's in a kicker ported box tuned to 35Hz. and the sub amp is a bassworx 3000.1d running 2000 watts rms @ 2 ohms. i have 1/0 gauge audison power and ground running to the sub amp, and 8 guage running to the other amp. the sub amp has a power/ground distro block built in. and it is all running off a kinetik 1400 battery. the last dB drag i went to i hit 146.8 dB's @ 48 Hz. the subs were a week old and they were not broken in yet. i will post some pics tommorow.

Finally picked up a pair of 10's, and installed them minutes before a show this past sunday. Managed to get a 150 completely untested. Going to make a small change for next Sunday which will be the final show till the new year.

Would be fun to make a nice looking box, but I'm not going for something nice looking. I Made it last week, and already tearing it apart this week to make changes. These boxes sound terrible when it comes to music. All they're good for is chasing numbers.
