I have a 2007 Santa Fe with stock 18" rims. With winter getting close, I would like to get a set of cheaper steel rims to mount winter tires - I'd like to find some 16 or 17" rims to reduce the cost of both the rim & tire set. Where could I find the rim specification for my Santa Fe (bolt pattern and offset)?

Welcome to the forum Alfons.

You can find all sorts of tire and rim info a little further down this page.

According to FastWheels.ca the OEM offset for Santa Fe's is 41mm with a 5x114.3mm (4.5in) bolt pattern.

I have a set of AR-106 rims left over from one of my jeeps - the rim size is 16 x 7 with 4.5" bolt spacing and 42 mm offset. I'm planning on adding some 240/70 - 16 snow tires which are just a bit larger than the original 235/60 - 18 Bridgestone - any comments?

Also, any suggestions for a good winter tire?

Just be sure that the AR rims's center hole diameter is big enough. Thought I had some cheap snow rims, too, but the silly things wouldn't fit the hubs.

Have a look at the Kumho Road Venture APT KL51. Very decent all-around tire for the price with good snow performance.

I too am impressed by th Kumho Road Venture APT KL51. A "V"-rated tire that carries a "600 A A" rating gets my attention. But I think these guys are looking more for a dedicated snow tires mounted on separate rims.

Although I only have personal experience with Hakkapeliitta snows, I had buddies that swear by Bridgestone Blizzaks. Still, I really think that what snow tires you get isn't nearly as important as just getting a set of snows. Just about any dedicated winter tire will far outperform all-seasons on slush/hardpack/ice. If they keep you from sliding over into the curb and bending a suspension arm, it's worth it already. That I'm speaking from experience of having lived up north - and before I wised up and got snows. I was just glad it was the A-arm that got hurt, not my arm.

Thanks for the tire suggestions, I'll check those out and see what "bargains" I can get once the winter tire sales start - should be next month sometime.

Also, canderson, thanks for the heads-up on the center hole, I'd forgotten about that as a potential problem. This time, I was lucky, I fitted one wheel with an AR-106 that still had a 255/70 -16 tire on it, and it all looks good, so once I select the new winter tires, I'll have them mounted on these rims - here's a picture of what the AR-106 rim looks like, American Racing don't seem to use that number for the same rims anymore for some reason.

(IMG:http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd1/Alfons_photos/ar_106_aero.jpg)

I had these left over from a jeep, they aren't all that popular for the jeep applications because of the offset, so no-one was too eager to buy them. To use a 31"+ tire on a jeep with these rims you need to use a spacer on the front otherwise they rub when you turn.

total edit: different thread!

The KL51 is a pretty darned good snow tire as they go, and one of the few with that quality that has a decent tread and temp rating. I'm giving it serious thought as an all-year tire.

Well I got the best deal on a set of 245/70 -16 Blizzaks - here's a picture of them on the SF mounted on the American Racing Rims I had left over from a jeep The wheels are only about .5" larger than the 235/60-18 All Season originals I took off, but it's showing a lot more "black" with the smaller diameter rims.

It's a bit early for winter tires, but I couldn't pass up the deal - if it looks like we're into a "dry spell", I'll put the all season back on until snow arrives.

Great looking snow tires/wheels! Personally, I think the taller tire sidewalls look a lot better - and more appropriate - on an SUV. Not to mention better ride.

Alfons,

I like that bull bar (right name?) you have on your santy, can you post a front side/end pic of it? I've been entertaining the idea of getting one for my 07 santy but wanted to have an idea how they look first.

Thanks,

Carlos

Carlos, I'll take a picture of it probably sometime tomorrow (Sunday) if it stops raining as forecast. It's been a really wet fall so far.

Well, we have sunshine today - glorious!!! Here are a couple of pics of the SF front showing the "bull bar". I'm not sure if that's the name for it, on the G1 SF it was called a "bush bar" and was a lot larger - I like this one myself.

Great, thanks Alfons. I'm trying to give my Limited a more "aggressive" look and move away, a little, from the softer original look. I already replaced the original tires with Nitto Grapplers 255/55/R18 mounted on Veracruz 18" rims. I put back the overhead luggage rails, installed a trailer hitch, took out the muffler and left on the 2 rear resonators and now I have a nice, conservative, better exhaust tone. I also added a magnetbra bug shield. The "bull bar" goes in line with my plans. Thanks again Alfons.

255s, eh? Yeah, yeah ... no snow in Kissimmee ... top down all year ... yeah, yeah (IMG:style_emoticons/default/auto.gif)

How many miles did you get out of the originals, and how close to "toast" (in 1/32") were they when you pulled them off?

The 255/55 is a very close match to the originals apart from the added width. Good pick.

Canderson, I got about 36,400 miles out of the OEM tires, the wear lines were already even with the tread on a couple of them. And yep, noooo snow here in balmy, swampy Florida. Speaking of Colorado, I'm driving up there this christmas, to Fort Collins to spend a week or so at my brother-in-law's, hopefuly I see some snow as I want to try my new tires in snow (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
