Can't seem to find this so going to post a new topic. I plan on replacing the fluids in my wife's 2005 Santa Fe.

Transfer Case
I found these instructions on how to replace:
http://hyundaisantafemessageboard.yuku.com...ewtopic/id/2592

Anyone know what type of fluid is needed and how much of it? I Have seen API GL-5 but not sure if this is correct.
Also anyone know what size Hex bolt I need?

Rear Differential

Anyone have instructions on how to do this?
Anyone know what type of fluid is needed and how much of it? I Have seen SAE 80W90 gear oil but again not sure if this is correct.

Thanks,
Joe

"Your Hyundai automatic transaxle is specially
designed to operate with HYUNDAI GENUINE
ATF SP III, DIAMOND ATF SP III, SK ATF SP
III or other brands approved by Hyundai Motor
Co., Damage caused by a nonspecified fluid is
not covered by your new vehicle limited warranty"

Transfer case and differential both specify. See owners manual under section 9:

API GL - 5 80w-90 gear oil.

A thought?

On my Tucson, you can't get all the fluid out of the tranny without a LOT of weird methods being used. That, and the fact that my Hyundai dealer with take ANY dealer's coupons as long as not expired. So I got the Tranny seriver done for 94 bucks - you *may* wish to price out the cost of the fluid, and find out if you can remove it all? To me, the 30 bucks more it cost me was worth the lack of hassle combined with knowing it was complutely flushed...

Seems like in Ohio they know how to treat customers but for me i say Stealership never again... After being charged 400 for a 60k which only consisted of coolant and tranny fluid flush they tell me its another 250 for the rear diff and 150 for the transcase. I then verified with 2 other dealers on this pricing, they confirmed. I couldnt believe a 60k only consisted of this even though the maintenance manual has so many other things that need to be done at 60k one of them being the timing belt. So with that said i refuse to pay them these prices to unscrew a couple bolts and use 50 bucks worth of fluid again.

Actually, it's plain old gear oil for the rear differential and transfer case. You buy it at Walmart in gallon jugs for $13, or $4 a quart. I think a gallon of gear oil should be enough. So yeah, it's a rip off.

Joe, good find on the link for the transfer case & rear diff drain/fill! My 2008 specs 70w90 gear oil for both. I'm just glad to see it's just plain'ol hypoid gear oil for these boxes and no fancy super expensive dealer only stuff.

Did them today...

Rear diff uses lil under 2 quarts and the transfer case around the same. It is a 10mm Socket (looks like a allen wrench in a socket) to take off the fill plug for the transfer case. Was easier then an oil change dont understand why dealers charge so much for such a simple thing to do. Cost 15 bucks worth of fluid much better then dishing out what the dealer chargers.

Looks like someone else posted some good pictures

Maybe the 2006 and under are different. The 2007+ take just under a quart for the T-case and just under a quart for the rear diff. 0.84 and 0.95qts to be exact. It's ridiculously easy to drain/fill either. I just did it and posted the results. Hard to believe a dealer would charge 100's of dollars for that. I just noticed the 2006 and under spec 80w90 where the 2007+ spec 70w90. I went middle ground w/ easy to find 75w90. The differences between the 3 are negligible. A quality 75w90 will be fine for any model year SF.
